I got the bug to go over to the dark side today when i re-read the "How to make a manly Miata" thread....
Looking at an NA on the way home tonite. Dealer is asking $3400 for it, has 167k miles, dark grean, clean, 5-speed, and a hard top. Don't know much about it beyond that.
But it's been on the lot for 3 months, not sure if that's a good or a bad sign, but we'll find out.
I may be off base, but I think it is really a buyers market right now. I can assure you one thing, car nuts like us are rare. There aren't many/any people looking for a two seat rwd sports car in the middle of winter in Indiana. Don'r be afraid to lowball, and good luck..

Sounds nice! What year? Does it have the 1.6 or 1.8?
Now that my dad has the bug, he's hunting for a car. The one that best fits our needs is $6k. But this is Cali (Miatas are worth more here), it only has 95k on it, and it's already set up as a track/street car with hardtop, rollbar, shocks, springs, sways, seat, wheels/tires, and even an FM butterfly brace.
I just need to convince my dad to pull money together and snatch it up before someone else does.
Play down the hard top. Act more like you expect it to be there. Also, the tan interior seems to show it's wear a bit more than the black cloth so you may want to refer to it as ratty looking.
If there is snow on the ground in your area or it is typically below 32 degrees I would suspect that no one else is looking at it this week.
Dark Green, if it is british racing green, would typically make it a '91 limited edition and a 1.6L

It could be a '97 and that would then be a 1.8L

There was also Montergo Blue which is a blue-green color and that would make it a '94 to '96 with a 1.8L

trust me guys, I have experience in this so called "buyers market." I spent a whole week looking for a car and the dealers just don't care. I seen cars sitting on lots for months especially SUVs. The dealers want you to buy new not used. Most don't care and are unwilling to negotiate. Some guy had the nerve to say only a $100 reduction. Their lots have no one and still they act like they control the situation. not the buyer. Sorry for the rant but that was my ordeal.
If you think its worth it, buy it esp cause its got the hard top.
I also think we'll see less used car private sales since people are holding on to what they got

I have found the exact opposite to be true. I'll often stop by new and used dealer lots when something catches my eye. I usually just leave my business card with the salesman saying something to the effect of "when you really have to move this thing, call me with your bottom price". You'd be surprised..

I see, you could wait a while. I guess they knew we needed a car in a week or two and were adamant with their prices. that makes sense.

I didn't even read your posts, but here goes: GOODLUCK!
Factoring in the hardtop you're essentially getting the car for $2400. A car like that with high miles might be hard to move in the dead of winter. I'd follow ManOfFewWords advice and leave a card for them to call once they get hard up to pay the heat or rent bill. Offer about $2600 and then be happy when they work you back closer to $3k.
