So couple weeks ago my jeep started with a horrible knocking sound. At first I only had it in drive but after a day I had the knocking constantly. I got under it and found 2 bolts on the flexplate to turque converter lose. I tighten all 4 bolts and it sounds perfect. Week later get the same sound back but this time it's constant wether in neutral or drive. Re checked the flex bolts and all are tight. I can't seem to pin point the location of the noise. When I look at the flexplate spinning it looks like there is movement not much and not sure if it's just the engine vibrating.

Cracked flexplate? Any way to know without pulling trans?

Other possibilities are broke piston skirt a Or bad lifter. Noise didn't change when opening oil fill cap do thinking top end good.

use a cam scope to look up at flexplate.

Flexplate crack probably started when the bolts loosened up, or something like that. Tightening the bolts helped but the damage was already done.

Attack it with a stethoscope.

Just ordered one, I used a dow rod and pretty much got the same sound from trans/engine/head so hopfully the scope can get a better reading..
