The Subaru Brat might not be the fastest way to get from point A to point B, but it can certainly get you where you are going if the pavement disappears.

This one for sale on Facebook Marketplace is billed as being “very dependable,” and retains those Chicken Tax-dodging jump seats.

I had a 4X4 station wagon that same year when I lived in Colorado. It was great in the snow.

How many spare head gaskets does it come with?

An old roommate had one of those (model before the rear seatbelts).  It seemed like he did head gaskets annually,

Not sure which I have loved more: spare tire under the hood or ski grips for the rear passengers?

These EA81 engines were actually pretty bulletproof, as were most Subaru engines up until about 1996 (EA82T excepted). They're a popular aircraft engine for a reason!

Failures on these are more likely to be due to poor maintenance or the marginally-sized radiator core for US driving habits instead of questionable design like the later EJ engines.

So if I stab a couple of baby seats in the back with some maybe not real babies attached, that would fly, legally speaking?

Guess its no different than a Ford Bronco really.
