Has anyone ever attempted to install lug studs with the hub still on the car? Would a corded impact driver be enough torque to pull studs through? If not, what would you recommend to keep it from turning, baring in mind that this is a one man project. I tried wedging a small crow bar between a stud and the ground, but that only compressed the spring when I torqued down on it. I don't have access to a press and don't really want to go through the hassle of taking the hubs off, stupid holden.
Thanks in advanced.
An impact should do it, but if not, add heat. Get that thing cherry red and an impact will pull it through.

I assume you mean the hub? I would think you'd want to throw the stud in the freezer for a bit first, and see if that gets you the fraction of a mm you need.
Sorry, yes, heat the hub.
Thanks for the advise. I don't have anything that would be able to direct that amount of heat (only a small space heater). However, I did figure out a way that seems to be working. Got one hub finished, working on the next one. Its tiring though! I'm sweating, and its only like 65 outside!

Put a bunch of washers over the stud so your lug nut cant tighten all the way down on the threads. As the nut tightens down and runs up against the washers it will pull the stud through. You may need to use a big cheater bar to get enough torque to do this by hand (yes i have girly arms)

There is no need for heat. I changed all ten on the front of my wife's Malibu with a breaker bar. How the inspection shop killed all the studs in one visit I'll never know.
To the o.p.
Yes and yes.
Only one stud and I had to file a slight relief on it to get it in place (universal stud was a bit longer than stock). A stack of washers and an electric impact drove it up fine.
Thanks all, I was able to get them all on. While I was in there, I sanded and painted the hubs with some rustoleum. I swear they were made out of rust. Silly aussies. Now I'm just running a die down the threads to clean them up before I put the new lug nuts on.
