Talking about the abolition of the speed channel got us thinking. Some really cool ideas were brought up.
I'm going to the studio to talk about doing a live show. This is basically a radio show with streaming video. You can chat live with the production team and call in. There are apps out to stream the audio, so this channel hopefully goes somewhere.
The idea behind the show is grassroots. I want to talk about everything from the little guy autocrossing to professional racing. I also want to discuss automotive subjects that don't involve racing. I want to enable listeners and make them interested. I want to have people live on the air. I want Keith to call and explain the strange majick he uses to squeeze Corvette engines into Miatas. Get Rutledge Wood live on the air to talk about hits projects. Get the point?
What suggestions do you have? Daily segments? There is a lot of laughter on the show, so I really want some funny segments. You guys are good with that. Not censored, but language is preferred to stay child friendly.
This will help with the pitch, so thanks a ton.

Add beer. I think it would make it more like standing around on your driveway BSing with your buddies. Loosens you up a bit and lubricates conversation. I think weekly would be as much as I'd want to see/hear. You'll run out of topics pretty quick.
It will be weekly if it happens and if beer is not subject matter, it will be consumed.
how long is the time slot?
I assume there will be a what car segment where a caller calls in, gives his or her criteria, and the ideal car is pointed out.
2 hours? And yes. Yes yes yes.
2 hours is probably doable. I'm starting a weekly podcast along similar lines, and I'm not sure I can fill an hour...
Mine will be self funded and promoted from an in-home studio, though...
Currently shopping for audio gear.
GOOD LUCK!
Maybe I can get you some tips on equipment. This would be out of a studio put together by serious radio veterans. You can check them out at www.talkstl.com around 10-2. I'm pretty active on their phone line harassing them.

Years ago some guys had a podcast/weekly video called Diggnation. They talked about the big and interesting topics on Digg.com. The best part about it was that they also drank beer while filming/recording. They had a couple before they started too, so by the end of the show they were as entertaining as the topics they covered.
At the same time, I can't stand Dave Dispane on Speed. Talk shows about racing are boring after the start of the season. Meanwhile CarTalk is for the most part fantastic.
I would probably go for more shorter segments. A single long show is difficult unless you are listening live.
Well, it would be live, but I want to cut up into segments. Any other good ideas for segments? I'll bump this tomorrow.
Find interesting/awesome build threads and have the owners call in and talk about their project and link to the build thread.
The aforementioned "what car" but make it "what race car" or "what project car." Interview a guest that is looking for a new project with a few criteria and have call in suggestions. You may have to wait until you have a fan base first.
Have a bench racing segment where listeners/forum members give topics. Take a few of those and do a discussion PTI style with a time limit per topic. You'd need some guests for this one.
Find a manufacturer of parts for a niche market and give him some air time for his business. Kinda free advertising for him; without the big money sell out of most car shows with their obvious "we recommend this product because they gave us lots of money" type stuff.
Honest product reviews. Once you've established that you aren't selling out.

Notes taken. You've expanded on some of my ideas. There is actually a "Moparguy" in the group of regular listeners. I kept getting confused because I thought he was you.
JG and I have discussed doing one. I did radio in college and think it would be fun.
Have a vehicle of the week where you talk about current availability and pricing, what mods are available, and what mods you'd do for stage 1, stage 2, etc. Maybe get people on the line who own and have modified that vehicle to get a solid real-world perspective. We like to have fun with all our vehicles, so this could even include shop trucks and kid haulers. (I've been itching to do something like this myself. I keep referring to it as the 'Zero to Hero Series.')
We actually drew up an outline for some episodes. We just need to get in the same place at the same time to do it.
Plus we can use our radio voices.
Zero to hero. Good concept. I love using my radio voice, David.
One of the focuses will be keeping all cars in play. Yes..... Even.... Hybrids...

In my listening experience, 2 hours is far too long. I used to commute 3 hours every day for my old job and I would get bored pretty quickly with any podcast that was longer than 45 minutes. 15 to 45 minutes is about right. You need to keep these things short, on point, succinct. If it gets too long it becomes just a bunch of rambling that is boring to anyone except the people involved.
2 hours is a lot of time out of anyone's day.
Talking to the producer today, so morning bump. Help me out with your creativity. I need ideas for short weekly segments. The "enable me" segment and "current project" segment are going to be discussed. I'm thinking a "what can we fit in there" segment would be nice. The dirtier or funnier the segment name is, the better.
Weekly interviews... Be specific if you have a good idea. Who can we involve? Maybe advertisement could be exchanged talkstl to grm/cm. That would be for the owners to work out. We can spotlight a GRM article once a month and a CM as well.
How many people here would tune in if you could? How many would go out of your way to tune in? How many would download the podcast later? How many would call in to harass me?
Thanks again,
Sperlo
Yes, Alan, I see your point. This is why I'm trying to keep the subject matter broad. now the other shows are on once a day for two hours and they can usually keep it interesting with phone call, segments, and no boundaries. The only segments that get dry are sports.
The more segments I get and the broader the subject matter is, the less likely the show will be to dry out.
I have no way to tune in during the day, but I would gladly add your 'cast to my regular regimen. I commute about 90 miles a day, so I need something fun to listen to. Count me in.
Right on. I'll post if/when it gets running. I've got a big list of segments and subjects. I'm still taking suggestions, though.
New segment - "Mo' money, mo' projects".
What would you build with unlimited money for a certain purpose.
- What would you build with unlimited money for obliterating track records?
- What would you build with unlimited money for stage rally?
- What would you build with unlimited money for top speed racing?
- What would you build with unlimited money to achieve the best MPG?
- What would you build with unlimited money for following the Arctic Circle across Northern Russia?
You get the idea, right?
That could go on for a while. LOL. Yea. Well... keep the ideas coming, I think this is gonna work out.
So what kind of response did you get?
The producer has been busy programming the system to run a computerized dj. We'll talk again today and hopefully it will be quick and easy. I've got a transmission to fix.
The initial pitch had him highly interested to say least give it a try. If the pitch goes well, I'll be headed out to the studio so we can talk it over and get some media made.
