My brothers girl got a 92 Yamaha Seca II. It didn't have plugs in it when she bought it and the battery was dead. We replaced these and it cranked just fine but didn't start-it didn't even sputter. Carbs came off and were cleaned, fuel was drained and replaced (but there is rust in the tank), but the bike still won't start. But it's trying now! It sputter like it's just about to start. I think it might have been flooded (they took the plugs out again). Well try tomorrow. Anyone have any other suggestions?

One more question: we live in NY and the seller doesnt have a title. He got it from his uncle after he died and was going to race it (the bike was not stolen). What happens if we can't get it from him?

title shouldn't be an issue....just have the local PD run the vin to ensure it's not stolen. they should have the proper paper work

We had the police run it. So, if the guy turns out to be a deadbeat, will the LoPo help us get a clear title?

Well, just like anything you need a good spark and fuel. Pull a plug and check for a good strong spark. I would do the quick and dirty; hit it with some starting fluid. If it runs, you've still got carb problems. On almost all the old bikes I've had, I install clear fuel lines and clear fuel filters, really helps with fuel probs.

She did get a Bill of Sale?

Squirt gas in the carb, it it fires up but dies after it uses the gas you put in, obviously gas isn't getting through the carb.

Somewhere in the world is a Title, maybe next of kin, estate? You could always walk up to the DMV window and act all stupid, "Gee, I dunno, my uncle died and all I got was a Bill o' Sale."

See how they respond, worse case is they tell you what you need.

If it's been sitting for a while, buy new tires.

If rust in the tank, take it to a radiator shop and have it boiled out and sealed on the inside.

Well, it looks like they got screwed out of $500. The head is cracked and rusted inside. It won't run, and the guy who sold it won't turn over the title now. They're Craigslisting it. New York City if anybody is interested. Probably best to part it out.

Hopefully they learned a couple lessons. Buying used carries no guarantees, and don't hand over the cash till the paperwork is straight, among others...

a.) Why won't the guy turn over the title if the bike is paid for?

b.) How can you sell it without a Title?

c.) Does the Bill of Sale say "As-Is"? (probably does)

d.) Have some lawyer give the seller a quick call.

a.) Apparently, he lied about a lot of things, including his relationship with his deceased "uncle". He probably couldn't get the title. If it was stolen, nobody reported it (which is weird), so we don't think that's the case. I don't know the details.

b.) "Here's my money." "Cool. Here's the keys. I'll get you the title in a few days. I don't have it because my uncle sold it to me and I was going to race it. Have fun!"

b'.) My broseph sells it as parts?

c.) Yes. But "As-Is" was understood to mean "the last guy who looked at it hooked up some spark plugs and a battery and it fired right up. It'll do the same for you since it was only a couple days ago.".

d.) It's not worth pursuing.

Thanks for your help, everybody. They definitely did learn a lesson. So did I! They'll be a bit more careful next time. If it was me, I would have asked a lawyer to call the guy, obtained the title, and then I would have pulled that engine, learned everything about it, and then put it back in with a few extra HP.
