I just picked up a Rockshox dropper post for my hardtail MTB. It's an aluminum post going into an aluminum seat tube. Rockshox recommends using a friction paste (no grease!).  I can go out and buy a tube of paste from Park Tools, but I also have containers of nickel and copper anti seize sitting on the shelf.

Should I spend the 20 bucks?

Thanks, Paul

Short answer, yes.

the friction paste increases friction and helps keep the post from slipping at lower clamp pressures. Lower clamp pressures keep you from deforming the tube and restricting the compression stroke. You see it on carbon posts too for similar reasons.

Yes, do it for the reasons mentioned above. You might check with your local bike shop...the one I work for stocks both a 1 pound tub as well as smaller quantities more suited to home use for $8. Finish Line is one brand that tends to do both big shop-use quantities as well as smaller home-use/hobbyist quantities for things like grease, titanium-friendly anti-seize, carbon assembly paste, etc.
