So, I have three shifter karts and every single one has a super rusty expansion chamber. I'm working on getting a buffer on a pedestal to clean them all up, but after that I want them to stay looking good. I like the look of bare metal, so I'd rather not use cerakote/exhaust paint unless there's a good clear (which I have not found). I'm thinking that the best option is to keep a light coating of oil on the pipe, but I'm wondering what oil will stand up to the high temperatures. WD-40 is rated super low, motor oil is better, high temp graphite based food safe oil and I've found some super high temp oil (krytox) that is priced far too high for this purpose.
Am I missing something? Are the oils bound to fail? Does the pipe not get as hot as I think it does?
I think it will cook the oil off each time you run them up to operating temp. Even on snowmobiles two-stroke pipes will get too hot to touch without burning yourself, and cook off any oils that get on them during maintenance and repairs
So pick one that easy to apply and least messy. I’d look toward the fogging oils that are meant for providing protection in storage and won’t drip or run to the bottom leaving the top surfaces exposed.
Bare metal in a high temp application, not going to work unless it's quality stainless.
I have an f500, my pipe is painted. They actually come that way. My EGTs run over 900*f, no oil that comes to mind has a smoke point lower than that.
I understand, but this is a have cake and eat it too situation. Make out of stainless or other corrosion resistant alloy or paint or coating.
Don't use Krytox, or if you do read the MSDS first. Really not good for your health...
What about wax? Gun bluing?

A young man has always dreamed on owning a Harley Davidson. One day he has finally saved up enough money so he goes down to the dealer. After picking out the perfect bike the dealer warns him that if he leaves his Harley in the rain the chrome has a tendency to rust. He tells the young man an old biker's trick is to keep a jar of Vaseline handy and smear it on the chrome if the bike must be left out in the rain.
A few months later the young man meets a woman and falls in love. She asks him to come home and meet her parents over dinner. He readily agrees and the date is set. At the appointed time he picks her up on his Harley and they ride to her parents house. Before they go in she tells him that they have a family tradition that whoever speaks first after dinner must do the dishes.
