I've been casually looking at fat tire bikes for a bit now. While browsing Amazon, I happened to find the navy blue version of the Mongoose Dolomite for $169. The other colors were $400-$600. So of course I bought it. It got here Monday (yesterday) and I started to assemble it. I finished assembling it today.
The last bicycle I had was when I was 8. It was a Kmart Huffy. I have no idea what I'm doing. I know less than nothing about bicycles.
So far, I've only ridden it around the driveway and already hate the terrible twist shifter. The stock seat/torture device was replaced with an XL wide seat before it was even assembled. The stock pedals also suck.
I have a 7 speed Shimano thumb shifter and aluminum mountain bike pedals on the way. The stock brakes kinda suck too so I was thinking about upgrading to Shimano hydraulic brakes in the future.
This bike will be a neighborhood cruiser and adult beverage delivery vehicle so nothing too extreme. I figure for $169, why the hell not?
Nice bike! I bought 2 mongoose malus'ses. Malusi? Got 2 for the wife and myself. Great kook bikes. Get some hoopty riser handlebars. They are heavy. Just gives you a better workout.
there is a low level shimano hydraulic disc brake kit that is SO NICE compared to the cable disc brakes. I did it to both of the maluses. It was around 50$ Per bike.
I had one for awhile that I didn't ride very much, turns out I hate riding in the snow anyway. They are heavy but like it's said above, more of a workout. I hated the shifter too.
Funny story about it though, I was giving it to a friend because I didn't want it. I drove it up from my country house to give it to him and he decided he didn't want it. So it was just sitting in my backyard.
An asshats decided to hop my fence and steal it, and then sold it to someone else. That moron rode it in front of a police officer and they arrested him since I filed a report. I got it back 2 days later.
But here's where it gets good: I had cameras and caught the guy stealing my bike on it and the guy that got arrested with it flipped on his buddy who was apparently running a stolen bike ring in town.
Long story short a guy stole a bike I didn't want, and they used it to take down an antire criminal ring.
Gave the bike away a few years later
If you haven't checked out the videos on Berm Peak (Seth's Bike Hacks) they're worth a watch

He did a good video recently on some more budget parts (including hydraulic disc brakes) as well as he has been playing with a Walmart MTB recently.

As far as I can tell, the Malus and Dolomite are essentially the same bike, just with different rims and colors. I have been looking at high rise handlebars or bar risers to help with the riding position.
I saw a few recommendations (Reddit? MB forum?) for the Shimano hydraulic brakes. I think its the MT200 system? Seems like a cheap but nice upgrade over the crap stock brakes.

Im pretty sure the mt200 hydraulics are what i used. They seem to be the same and similar price. The difference between the cheapo hydraulics and the cheapo cable calipers is HUGE! Hydraulic is the only way to go. even though cheap, its still Shimano quality!
Is that the stock seat or the seat you put on to replace the stock seat? The item shown looks... unique?
In reply to pres589 (djronnebaum) :
The stock seat was very narrow and hard. That is the seat I bought to replace the stock torture device. The new seat is about 13.5" inches wide and the horn is a lot shorter. It is a lot more comfortable.

check out bmx cruiser bars (wheelie bike bars in some circles) They've got a much higher rise than mtb bars (and modern big bmx bikes are very similarly shaped to what you have) and they look cool. I'm a fan of 4pc bars myself

The huge SE handlebars are sweet. Great looking bikes too.
