Saw a piece in the local paper today about a group of English engineers building a car to break 1000mph! Fighter jet engine, and a big solid fuel rocket that kicks in at 350mph. Showed a nice full size mock-up, a jet engine on a frame, and showed off the rocket. Rocket has an unusual fuel system of hydrogen peroxide thru a cat screen, to a rubber lined case. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/videobeta/?watchId=b8a5ad03-d207-4f47-9e50-e481fafd85a4?track=hp-vid.
As a guy that played with rockets a bit as a kid, the idea of an 18" diameter, 12' long rocket, being fueled by a Cosworth powered pump, would not make me all warm and fuzzy. Claim they are going to do this at a South African desert. Interesting. Comments?
A friend of mine in medical school was a rocket scientist at NASA before deciding he wanted to be a physician. He took a day off of school once to go see the rocket he designed test fired at NASA. His hobby is now building peroxide rockets, with the catalyst screen.
From what I hear, they are hiring.
If you have the time, it would be one hell of an adventure.
There is (?) another effort with Thrust SSC's driver Andy Green supposedly picked to be at the controls. This may be the same project, but I thought the US effort was to take place on black rock dry lake bed.
BTW, Alfadriver, got any contact info, time for a change!
Head of the British project was the Grand Marshal at the Rolex 24 this year. He was once the holder of the record that they are trying to break.

That's Andy Green. It's the same team then.
Yeah, and where do I apply. I got first dibs.
Hiring may be the wrong word- they did put in the Times an ad for volunteers....

No harm in contacting them, especailly if you are a rocket scientist (or training to be one)...

If you wanted to exploit the challenge rules-a peroxide jet drag car would cool. The peroxide and catalyst would technically be fuel and not count against budget. ![](/media/img/icons/smilies/evil-18.png)
1000...damn. What's record now? Thrust SSC did 760-something, right?
Any position but DRIVER!!!!!
