That's the amount of time my inlaws have been at my house and they backed into the ONLY thing in the garage.... the FZ. Seriously? You bought an SUV with a friggin backup camera on the damn dash. ... and you still hit the ONLY THING IN THE DAMN GARAGE?
ARgh...... broke off the license light, bottom half of the alien fender etc. Guess who's getting a tail tidy sooner than he thought?
Some in laws are almost worth a divorce.
Lucky for me, mine are 20 hours away and don't have the money to come visit.
Mine are NORMALLY 28 hours one way...... but we're they're pitstop on the way to visit their grandkids on the east coast.
I would consider sending them the replacement bill. ESPECIALLY if they didn't already offer to cover repairs.
If you don't own the garage you don't park in the garage. I don't care if it's icy or snowy out. If you can't walk in the weather, you can't drive in the weather.
Seriously, why the berkeley are they parking in the garage?

I was so happy to be rid of mine, once I got divorced. He actually had the balls to call me, a week later, to try to bargain snow removal, for the rest of the season, if I fixed his truck (can't remember exactly what it was, but I figured a good part of a Saturday). This was in late March!

happy in-laws = happy wife = happy life.
Ok full story. They drove up on their way to New Jersey to see their grand children. We made a convenient stop over for a few days (as we have no grand children to offer them). They got on last night. Wife and I go to work, she takes her mom to school. Her dad decides to unload the car so he backs it into the garage so he doesn't have to carry it an extra 25'.
Backs into the tail of the FZ, shatters the fender and license light. I go home for lubch to grab the snacks the wife made for my co workers and he shows me. Seriously. That door is 16' wide, that portion of the garage is 25' by 25'. The only thing there is the bike. How does this even happen?
OE replacement parts are about $40. Yoshimura tail tidy is $120.

At least he admitted it. The last in law, that backed into something in my yard, denied it, even after picture proof. That one is not allowed in the yard ever again.

In my opinion, the monetary side of the resolution depends on several things. If he offers to pay (if he's a real man, he will), then that's the easy settlement. If he doesn't offer, and you don't have a good relationship with him/them, and don't care what your wife thinks, then press the issue that he should pay. If you get along with them, and you want to impress your wife, then say "no problem, I'll take care of it." If scenario 3 is the operative one, that will make you a fantastic guy with the in laws and your wife, and will contribute to a very happy life!
He already offered to pay. I won't make him, but he'll leave money with the wife I'm sure to more than cover it.
Just frustrated. IT's in the safest place I can put it (in MY garage) and someone else backs into it. Just..... wow. Ya know?
I think you should kick his ass.

He screwed up, admitted it, and offered to make it right. That is unfortunately more than most people would do these days. E36 M3 happens, don't let it get to you. Most of mine wouldn't realize it if they did it, and if they did they wouldn't admit it.
As you are already planning, if you have to fix it might as well upgrade it at the same time.
I keep trying to get trunked.
It only seems like the stuff you don't like never gets hurt, but the stuff you love is a damage magnet.
berkeleying Murphy. ...

The only downside was the original tail tidy I had chosen reuses the license light. D'OH!
Make your wife call you Daddy until they leave If they comment or ask she's to respond with a comment about normally hitting the back wall when parking it in the garage, or choosing to park around back instead.
You keep saying "tail tidy". WTF is that? There is no way I am googling "tail tidy".
Goes from the alien arm hanging off the back like this:
To something a little clener and less .... wierd.like this:
Ahhh berkeley. Well that sucks! Let this be the only damage this bike suffers henceforth! It has been decreed!

All's well that ends well. And this sounds like it'll end well for you. Good. A bit of frustration for you, no doubt. But I can assure you (I'm 66, so from experience), there'll be more frustrating experiences similar to this. Treat it appropriately, use it as a learning experience, and move on. It's life. Enjoy life.
He did you a favor. That ugly plate holder should have never left the dealership.
Otherwise, nice bike!

my in-laws are one of the reasons why we only get cars with stick shifts. "oh i'm sorry, we only have 1 automatic, that old rusty van, and it's broken at the moment (which is true)". My in laws are great, but there's no way i'll toss any of them my keys. Maybe my FIL, but the rest of them
Fun fact, it IS possible to high center a corolla in a parking lot unintentionally at 5 mph.
