This is America's new $13 billion warship.... USS Gerald Ford.
Not sure I like the trend of naming them after presidents. I liked the older, semi-random naming style.
Ford. An un-elected president, really? So.... we can expect a USS Carter then?
...and they say the government does not create jobs...
Try building one yourself. Honestly that price is probably about right.
4.5 acres of sovereign US territory wherever you want.
Have you ever seen a "defense" spending amount that was a nice price?

It could be a solar-powered command ship that isn't much good for command but belts out sensible advice over loudspeakers and the radio, which everyone ignores because it sounds so negative

In reply to mad_machine:
There's a carrier with the name Bush out sailing the seas.......
The next one of this class is supposed to be the Enterprise however.
George Bush is dead!?!?

But, yes, I agree. I thought it was pretty strange naming a ship after a still breathing president.
So what's the big deal? It's only 13 Billion. Hell, Don Johnson was once picked up trying to cross into Switzerland with almost that much in cash in a brief case. No, I'm not making that up and no, that was not on TV or a movie, that was real life. OK, maybe it was about half that amount, but still, two little road trips for a washed-up actor from Germany to Switzerland and you have enough cash to buy one of those things.
Ahhh, yes, a Carter sub. Makes sense, but still in a way insulting.
You know, those things are full of...
Check that, third in class......WTF?
How the Kennedy's lobbied to beat out the return of The Big E is beyond me.

The sub is apropos, considering Carter's Navy job as a nuclear engineer.

....so that means a Bill Clinton submarine is only a matter of time?

I agree. I think this concept of naming E36 M3 after politicians is something the soviet union would do.

There was some lobbying on that one as you are right, they don't usually do that.

What landed on Lewinski's dress.
If you want some giggles check out the corrosion issues some of our other new "wold class" vessels are having. Silly engineers... Disintegrating Defense Dollars
