The CEL comes on last night - I'm 180 miles from home and it has a weird idle and seems to shift funky.

Conveniently, I'm one mile from a dealer - they check it and coil pack #2 is shot - replace.  Part costs $155 from Chevy........ouch.

The truck runs great - already put 100 miles on it.  Do I go home and buy the Rock Auto $25-$40 coil packs and replace the other 7?

(167,000 miles)

I wouldn't.  Maybe buy 1 and keep it in the truck for emergencies.

I don't know Chevys, but the Triton motors in Fords are known to eat coils.  I just kept a new Rock Auto special in the glovebox along with a 1/4" ratchet with a 7mm socket on it.  When I'd get a misfire, I'd find the offending cylinder with the OBDII scanner, swap the coil out, and order up a new one when I got home.

Your original coils are probably going to last longer than a Rock Auto white box special.

Carry one good spare, and a couple of tools.

That's not a guarantee I'd take to the bank and frankly why subject yourself and loved ones to needless drama on the side of road in the dark. Also RAuto does carry various grades of these coils do your research and be done with it. Been there done that keep the freeekin Tshirt
