Hello,

I have been married for 22 and a half years. I would like to do something pretty big for our 25th anniversary.

For our 20th anniversary we traveld to Alaska and back. I t was a five week trip. As seen here in reverse chronological order: http://celebrating20.blogspot.com/ In that trip we took the whole family.

For this trip I am thinking just my wife and I.

For some background, we met an married in San Diego.

I was 21 she was 24, we moved two months later to Honolulu Hawaii (I was US Navy). Over the course of our marriage we have lived many places. San Diego, Honolulu, Houston, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, and Champaign, ILL. ( we are currently in Champaign )

We have been all over Asia, including a trip in 2006 to adopt our daughter in China,

we love asia but I am thinking we should go someplace we haven't been. Neither of us have been to Europe, though I can't say we really want to go to Europe. I had thought about going to Turkey, but with the trouble they are having with Syria that might not be a good idea.

I don't mind spending some money on this, nothing like space travel, but I am not cheap either. So, what says the Grassroots hive? 25th wedding anniversary?

Thanks!

Italy, coinciding with the F1 race at Monza?

Maybe somewhere in South America?

For me that would go down as well as buying 'her' a boob job a one way ticket to divorce court.

Ouch!

My wife and I want to visit Europe in the next 4-6 years, but are waiting until we can go for 12-14 days. She understands 3 of those days will be at a race track.

There are some great bed and breakfast driving tours across Ireland.

The people of Scotland are fantastic. Loved Edinburgh and the metro system is exceptional.

Paris is the most romantic city in the world. My wife and I would go every year if we could afford it.

You traveling on military ID cards?

Paris sucks.

Southern Spain is my game... A nice little place called Alicante... Right on the med. Most beautiful vistas I've ever seen.

Seriously, though, Amanda want's to go to Le Mans, Goodwood, and the Monaco GP. That would be a hell of a trip!

I've HEARD Paris sucks but never experienced it sucking. Parisians don't seem to bother me for some reason.

This is already planned, the "great Lakes Trip", but for our 25th I am thinking of leaving the country, or something.

We will make the great lakes trip though, with the camper and the family. (I want to get to the Edmunds Fitzgerald museum.)

Might I recommend Crete? You get stunning Mediterranean climate and geography with a unique cultural heritage, and if Greece gets back on the Drachma, stupid cheap (it's already pretty cheap).

Passports, I left the navy in 1994.

Thought about Paris, Ireland sounds interesting.

Thanks! I didn't think of that Crete, check, got it on the list of things to check out.

I could get away with that, but not as part of a 25 anniversary trip

What time of year? That will strongly influence the destination.

For our 20th, I rented a villa on St. John for a week, between Christmas and New Years (anniversary 12/29). It was a remarkably pleasant, if low-key, trip.

Since you said 22 1/2 years, I'll assume you were married in the summer? Here are my thoughts.

  • Alaska is an awesome visit, especially if you're into outdoorsy things.
  • Iceland is an incredibly diverse island with a ton of geographical regions that defy explanation.
  • Mainland Europe is lovely in the summer
  • Tibet, Nepal, and Northern China make for a really nice trekker trip.
  • Central Africa might be a nice trip. Northern Africa in the summer is a PITA, but central and southern Africa are nice, especially the western coast.

With the time and money, I would drive a circuit of Germany, Austria, northern Italy, France, Belgium, and back.

I really liked the Rhineland area of Germany, and your wife will probably love it too. Cologne is a fun city, and farther south down the Rhine is gorgeous, quite, friendly, wine country. That, and the Nurburgring is easily accessible. Drive the Nurburgring.

Other city in Germany I highly recommend is Bamberg. It is this surprising gem in Germany that most people don't know about. So it is a great city to do things in without being stuck in a tourist trap. It is the only major city that we didn't bomb in WWII, and it is a medieval town with houses along the river sitting unevenly as they have slowly settled over the centuries. It actually has its own cathedral because it used to be the capitol of Frankonia before it was conquered by Bavaria before that was absorbed by Germany, and they insist to this day that they are Frankonian. They also have excellent beer there. The city is known for rauchbier (smoked beer) and you're not far from some of the greatest bavarian breweries. If you go to Bavaria, visit Schneider Brewing.

+1 for Crete as well. Very cheap, super laid back, lots of fun and food is ridiculous good. Definitely going to take the wife someday.

Similar to Crete, I would highly recommend Greek islands in general, especially Santorini. SWMBO and I went a couple of years ago and stayed in a hotel room in Fira that was dug into the cliff face on one side and had an incredible view of the Mediterranean on the other. A few centuries ago, it had apparently been part of the house of a ship captain.
