For those who take an interest in firearms, this might be the biggest boom-stick around.

Sweet Holy Hell. I know we are really good at making stuff to kill each other with but that beats a pointed stick by quite a lot.
Big gun article guy said: then figure out how to sight in a rifle with an effective range that, with a bullet that weighs almost 4 ounces, is certainly over 5,400 meters
That is, uh, quite the unique problem to have...
So conceivably a 30 inch group at 5 kilometers? Are we hunting helicopters? Ships? Tanks?
What's the shot delay over those ranges?
But a sporting exemption... Hmm... I wonder what the price tag would be in the class 3 market. M16s and RPG 7s run around $45 grand buying from brokers, I'd imagine much steeper buy in, then that ammo cost...
In reply to Robbie: normally yes. But in certain desert conditions and with a nice high firing position the wimpy .50 cal just doesn't have the reach at a mile of effective range.

They say that if you're standing on the ground, 5k is about the max before the curvature of the Earth starts to cause problems. That would be someplace totally flat and open like the desert, a salt flat, or open water. If you start from an elevated position like a hill top or high rooftop though, that can be extended a bit.
You can see tall things like skyscrapers and mountains from very far away though. I can see buildings over 15 miles away when I visit my in-laws.

True. I imagine this .58-caliber "rifle" (more like field artillery piece) requires a spotter with a radio saying "left 3, up 5 fire for effect."

Tell that to the Canadian sniper who made a verified kill at a tick over mile with his .50 in Afghanistan a few years back... Against a walking target...
In reply to WildScotsRacing:
Apparently the ballistics of the .50 cal are pretty bad. The go-to round for the last decade has been the .338 Lapua.

There's going to be a Fallout5?
