Car related story from when I visited Italy in 1989:
Our cousin Louie (aka Luigi) was a car guy, and he had a couple old Alfas and an original Fiat 500. He asked my dad and I if we wanted to go cruising around the countryside and visit some of the neighboring towns, and he shows up to our place with the Fiat. It was white, and looked just like this:
I couldn't believe how small it was, but it was perfect for the tiny roads and alleys they had over there. As a 7 year old kid, I took up the entire back seat!
Louie had a surprise for us: he decided that day that it would be "fun" to go take this diminutive go-kart of a car across one of the tallest bridges on the planet.
I'm pretty sure it was this one: the Italia Viaduct in northern Calabria. I remember the wind tossing around the car on the bridge and my dad saying "Louie, you are nuts!" over and over again in Italian. I just sat in the back of the thing laughing. I also remember going down an access road to look up at the bridge after we crossed it. Just looking at it gave me the spins! My dad has pictures of the bridge somewhere that I'll have to dig up.
Louie has since passed, but my dad says his family still has all his cars. If I ever go back, I want to pay a visit to them and that little Cinquecento that ferried us around that day. Such a cool little car.
Oh, and another fun car-related thing: there was a big hill on the road that went into town, and it bottoms out in the town square. A local "sport" in town was coming into town on that road, accelerating around the curve, and then cutting the engine and seeing how far you could coast. And the most common vehicle to do this in? The Piaggio Ape.
Everyone did this, but these little guys were the champions. It took some finesse to make it around the curve at speed without tipping, but it was fun to watch. There were a few little cafes downtown where people would sit outside, and they would cheer them on if they made it to the other hill on the opposite side of the square where many of the houses were. People will find any way to find fun with vehicles.
