Today is the 76th anniversary
Today is #DDay. A day to honor our heroes. More than 160,000 brave Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France, June 6, 1944.
Easy to forget with everything else that's going on, so thanks for the reminder.
My Father was originally scheduled for operation anvil on June 6 in the South of France ( Mediterranean) but lack of equipment postponed it until August 15

I'm sitting here with my coffee, looking at my 19 yr old son, more thankful than I can express that he (so far) doesn't have to do what our grandads did.

A few years ago we visited Normandy with a Viking River Cruise and walked on Omaha Beach. That was an experience of a lifetime. But the most moving experience was visiting the American Cemetary farther along the coast on the hill.
Let it never be forgotten. Some backstory about the origin of the name D-Day:

A friend and I spent a few days in the Normandy area last Sept. I agree the cemetery is a must see. Very moving! And as for Omaha beach. Anyone who was able to cross it to just get to the shingle, let alone climb that bluff and then was still able to fight were some lucky son-of-a- bitches!
As we were walking along one of the paths in the cemetery, as some sections of the grassy areas was roped off we reached one end and as we turned to start back we happened across Gen. Lesley McNair's grave. He was the highest ranking American killed in Europe. He was killed by friendly fire too. During one of the carpet bombing missions by the 8th AAF a bomb landed in the foxhole he was taking shelter in.
Every year this date rolls around I remember. I've been fascinated about both world wars since I was young, very astonishing.
Dan Carlin has some great podcast on both wars, highly recommend listening to.
