"S.L.A. Marshall was commissioned to serve as a combat historian with the Army in World War II. By 1960, he was already concerned that the passing of the years and the retelling of the story have softened the horror of Omaha Beach on D Day. That year the Atlantic Monthly published Marshall’s essay on Omaha Beach based on the field notes he had compiled during his service as combat historian. The essay — ‘First Wave at Omaha Beach’— is available online. Marshall’s essay was the original source for some of the telling details that Stephen Ambrose memorialized in his book on D-Day.”

That was an excellent read.

I may have to re-read Cornelius Ryan's The Longest Day.  I presume that's still the best account.

Good read.

Grandpa did t talk much about his service. But after a few beers he would tell some stories.

The one my mom remembers the most was that a landing craft of marines cut in front of his landing craft on d day. The landing of marines hit a mine and blew up injuring and killing many. He always said if it wasn't for this marines his landing craft would have hit the mine and he would have perished.

There are better. I just finished one of the entire fight for Normandy that has a lot of personal stories. If I were home, I would tell you what it was, but it was a lot of good info.

There has been a lot of ink spilled on the Normandy invasion. I'm away from my library until next week, but I'll try to add a few recommendations when I return.

You'll need to log in to post.
