That's quite a statement from a guy waiting for an Aerowagon!

I have no idea what an Aerowagon is, but it sounds sexy.

It's just a C7 with a different hatch. I think it's cool enough to go through the trouble of ordering one and paying for it, but it's not 4wd diesel JDM van cool. Park them next to each other and no one would even notice the Corvette.

Somehow I don't think that is even remotely true.

The Delica has arrived in Vancouver in its shipping container. Now it travels via rail to Ontario to my importers shop. From there I am having him go through a bunch of stuff while I wait for it to meet the 25 year rule(August I believe). I am very excited, and nervous at the same time now.

Very cool van! Price doesn't seem bad at all.

The Delica is in Ontario at my importers shop. He is waiting on teh snow to stop to get some more detailed pics, and a video or two of the van. I am really excited about this! My importer is even more impressed with the van now that he has it in the metal than he was via descriptions and pics. That is an even more encouraging development.

My major issues moving forward is how to get it into the USA legally. I know the 25 year rule allows it to enter the country, but I am still confused as to how closely they look at the manufacture month. I am resigned to having to wait until it hits that month which I believe is August, but I have heard other rumors that say otehrwise.

Also the logistics of getting it across the border are daunting right now. My state doesn't issue temp plates, so I can't go that route. I could use plates from one of my other vehicles, and use the 7 day transfer rule my state allows for purchases, but I worry that if at the border I show up with plates, and a registration for say a 74 Mazda truck on an 89 Mitsubishi van if customs/border agenst may not like that. I could also use temp Ontario plates according to my importer, but will the border agents like those? My otehr option is to either truck and trailer to Ontario or Quebec, and bring it across on the trailer.

Also the problem with insurance. I don't know if it is possible, but I do know two guys in WA, and OR that have these vans already. One has Progressive which may or may not be available in my state, but I am not sure if I need to have the vehicle in my possesion forst before getting it insured, or if I can just get a policy, and go from there.

My importer says he plans on getting me an Ontario title for teh van, so that may ease some of teh issues, but I really don;t have teh answers for a lot of them with being in a really tough state when it comes to almost anything, but especially car registration/title/insurance.

Any help would be appreciated.

Chris

In reply to Mazdax605:

Play it safe. Wait for the month to import. Contact your insurance agent and give them the VIN. They will walk you through the rest of the insurance process. Go in to register and title prepared to waste some time.

In my experience getting historic plates they don't care about the build month. I had a '79 car built in October of 78 and they made me wait until the calendar turned to register it as a classic. YMMV.

If you have the VIN you should be able to insurance shop now.

It IS by the month.

Call CBP and ask. 1-877-CBP-5511 My bet is that some solutions might not be legal, but there should be a common workaround. Might be as simple as filling out another form.

You are just going to have to call around and ask regarding insurance.

Insurance can be fun for non-US vehicles, I've had that issue with a few motorcycles. As they're not DDs, I was happy to insure them with Hagerty as neither our current insurer nor a couple of others would have covered it. IIRC Geico might, so it's worth calling them.

My importer made this video of the Delica that I hope to have sometime this summer. Just waiting on it being legal, and working out the details of getting it over the border.

I damn near gave myself whiplash today. I was driving down the main drag in town (40mph) and I spot a bright blue R32 Skyline at the gas station right off I84. This is particularly rare considering the the middle of no where in Eastern Oregon.

Just caught this. This is your wackiest purchase to date, Chris. I love it!!! I definitely have to see this one in person.

I'd be concerned about DDing it only from a safety/crashworthiness standpoint, though.

Such a random, random choice.

This is something I have wondered about for a long time. On cars like that which were built in Japan for the Japanese market why aren't all the badges done in Japanese letters?

Wow! I love everything about it - your importer did a great job getting such a clean example, and the option package is perfect. I call first dibs when you sell it. I'll show my wife the video and maybe she'll be sold too. Seriously excited for you.

I called Progressive insurance about getting it insured once I get it, and they said no problem. It took a little while on the phone with the sales rep, but he found it in their system as I know two people in the states with Delica's insured through them. Now I just need to wait for it to be legal, and figure out how I am going to get it home. My Passport should be coming in soon, so a trip to Awesomeland ( I mean Canada) is in my future.
