Adding power locks?

I am thinking about adding power door locks to my 95 (base) miata.

The lock cylinders are getting to the point that they require the right touch to work with the key. Also, just getting tired of stooping down to unlock the car. There was also a recent incident where I locked my keys in the car and had to ride the bus to go home and get the spare.

Overall, what can I say other then that I have become spoiled by having cars that had power locks?

The question is, does anyone know a good kit to do this and what would it be like to install it?

There is a "thumpin sterio and remote start"-type place I drive by, been thinking about asking for a quote from them. (typical worries of what kind of work they do, etc) But want to look at DIY first.

My friends just did this to there cobalt with an eBay kit. Said it went surprisingly easy.

Interesting. I have owned the same Miata for 17 yrs and I have never locked it, after all, the roof is made of cloth and the rear window...plastic.
In your "locked out" situation, could you not get some fingers between the back window and the flap to work the zipper from the outside?

Edit: maybe you have a hardtop.

yup on the hardtop.

I felt pretty dumb, I left the key in the ignition and even held the door handle so it wouldn't unlock itself as I closed it. (need to hide a key on that mofo for myself)

I've done that more than once with my Miata, usually only with the hardtop on so I can't get it open.

I don't disagree with your desire for power locks, but as a guy who sometimes has to charge people a lot of money to get into their trunks where the electrical release has failed, and the lock is rusted solid because the key has never been in the tumbler, I will suggest you get a new key cut from code, and lube the lock cylinders.

Streetwise, it isnt that the locks are tight, they are loose enough I have to jiggle the key up and down in them to get them to turn.

Honestly, I am forced to wonder if a screwdriver could jimmy them.
