Thoughts?

Also, please be respectful of others views. I'm sure to some this is completely justified, to others it's an outrage, and everywhere in between. Let's talk about this like the people we are. Folks who are all affected by this and will most likely disagree on it's importance and/or justification.

What are we looking at here? Military spending?

Percentages of what?

Or is this a touchy-subject joke and the absence of units/explanation is the key...

The title of the graph says "global spending graph" so I'm going to go on that. Following the links on the image url says it's a left wing site upset about military spending.

My take: Spending money on the military makes sense because:

It's constitutional

It makes sense to pack a big armament that's so technologically advanced that the mere thought of it is a deterrent to war.

It doesn't make sense because:

We don't need to be fighting any wars right now. Any. If you tucked all of that money in, and just spent on troop care and R&D and such, it would be more understandable.

Another point, in a country like China, how do we know that A, the data is true and B, that the data was taken in a meaningful manner?

That seems like a reasonable assumption about the graph, but I'm still waiting for the OP to clarify what he's asking before I wander down any particular train of thought.

I am assuming that graph is "People looking at internet porn right now" and likely pretty accurate.

Being about a touchy subject, the graph could be about porn spending, too.

Dirty minds think alike fellas?

If it is "military spending" I have questions about where the US number comes from. Because if they lump in Homeland Security (TSA, Coast Guard, Border Patrol), the Veterans Administration (Health Care, Retirement benefits, Disability), and spooks (CIA, State Department spies, Contractors) it's going to inflate our spending number extremely significantly.

Also, we own and operate more Aircraft Carriers (with planes!) than the rest of the world combined. Ask England how cheap it is to ensure freedom of trade on the seas and whether or not that's an expenditure worth paying.

As far as what to cut; hell if I know. I imagine that there are numerous people who do nothing except calculate what needs to be cut in the military... Either they don't have a voice, or they don't know, either.

There are just so many ways that military spending is tied into the US economy. Cut military purchases? Great, now a huge chunk of the manufacturing sector is out of work. Cut back on recruitment or let enlistments expire? Well, there goes a huge chunk of the middle class/ lower-middle class workforce.

What we should be more concerned about is wastefull government spending in all areas and the corrupt politicians who spend it.

Typical internet loudmouth site. Makes wild accusations with absolutely zero actual data to back it up. Military reservations with landmass equal to 3 states? 750+ bases worldwide? 40-something percent of world-wide military spending with no actual dollar figure or breakdown in costs? Quack.

I think we are wasting money on Military spending because we are not using it enough. I mean, that chart is the perfect way to plan our next annex! Sorry Sub-Saharan Africa.
