Interesting read. I went through this when my wife was hit in a fairly new car. As others have said, the point of diminished value is to make you whole again if the accident was not your fault.
We got a reasonable check for our diminished value from the at fault party's insurance, and that money DID come into play when we sold the car.

Thats good you got a reasonable check. When I hired an appraiser and they said I was owed $1800 and I was offered 10% of that, well, time to get to work.
