I'd put Shirow's Appleseed and Black Magic M-66, in there as well.
For some reason, I've always been drawn to Patlabor, the Moble Police. The dub back in the VHS days was exceptional. The original movie, felt like a movie, not an anime. It ends up being a detective thriller, rather than giant fighting robots, a whodunnit, even though they figure out who the villain is in the first 5 minutes. Beyond Miyazaki, they are my favourites.
I just happened to acquire Black Magic M-66 and the original Appleseed today from a man of culture I ran into on my search who has an impeccably curated collection of hard-to-find classic anime. PM me if you want more details

I saw a remake of Appleseed that was very good and very true to the original manga.
I’d agree that Akira is more WTF than Ghost in the Shell but enjoy both movies. Might have to re-read the Akira manga, though, as it’s been a while. (Sort of related, but check out the book “Speed Tribes” for more about ’90s Japanese youth culture: bike gangs, hackers, a male porn star, etc.

I read the phone books. There's so much more in them. But there still didn't seem to be any answers.

A guy I know...kinda...Joe Peacock- once held the largest private cel collection from Akira. Used to do tours and talks and all sorts of stuff related to Akira. Donated the whole thing to the film academy a while back.

Those were the dark days. $50 for 2 twenty minute episodes on a VHS tape.
...and if you wanted subtitles, it was an extra $10. Which of course you paid because dubs were for people who just didn't 'get it'.
Remember tape trading and fan-subs? Hell, we got our hands on 4th generation copies of random Urusei Yatsura episodes with no translation felt lucky to have it!

Or when you stumbled upon Dominion: Tank Police or Robot Carnival on TV? It was like an unscheduled birthday gift. You were glued to the set because you didn't know if you'd ever see it again.
Anyone else ever watch Vampire Hunter D? I remember walking to the video store for that one.

I'm not 100% but I think I own a copy of that. I'd have to go back through my DVD collection. There's a lot of stuff in there I've probably forgotten about.
In reply to Mndsm :
I think I once found the entire movie online. One day, I should watch it.
Just to add a little wrinkle to Akira, there are two different English language dubs–the VHS/original theatrical release and then the later DVD/later theatrical release.
Since I first saw Akira upon its release, I still recall more of the early dub lines although I have heard that they’re not as accurate as the later ones.
Sharing this just because I always loved the “Men, we’re going to the Olympics” line.

If my ears don't lie, the voice actor for Kaneda (also pronounced incorrectly in the original dub) was the same voice as Leonardo from TMNT.

I was Toys'r'us (Canada) on Sunday, and they had a box set of Akira manga. I was intrigued but no pricing on it. Amazon lists it at $285 Canadian so it was probably at that $300 mark in store. Special re-translated with 'sound effects never before done in the English translation' for its 30th anniversary. I did not purchase it.
There are a number of Anime that kind of do the "removed from realism and train of thought" thing. It can be something of an acquired tast, similar to abstract art or avant garde fashion. It leave a lot of room for interpreting meaning if you can get past "wtf am I watching".
As others are throwing out other series that do similar. In many ways FLCL (Fooly Cooly) sends you on a similar, but more fun trip. Its more of what's termed "Quack Anime". At least, its a good and popular example.
I dated a Weebo (obsessed with all things japan) girl for a bit in college. I definitely got exposed to some WEIRD anime. Excel Saga, Chromartie High School, GANTZ, Love Hena, Full Metal Panic, D.grey-man, and so so many others that the name escapes me.
I could spend quite awhile thinking through what the really weird ones were, it was about 15 years ago now.
My favorite anime motorcycles were always the ones from Mospeada (mostly known in the US as "3rd generation Robotech").

Just rec'd (on interlibrary loan) and started the entire series of "Cowboy Bebop". I saw the feature movie a long, long time ago but never the original series. I like it so far!

I remember the commercials but never watched it. That good?

I'm reasonably certain that Cartoon Network has beenairing Bebop continuously for close to 20 years.
Yeah, it's that good.

Does currently listening to Cannonball Adderley count?

I wonder if we get CN. To be honest, I watch very, very little TV. (I know we have Roku and Netflix, though.)
