Lifespan is definitely a concern too. I think this is Old Person Thinking - you have to see a few services rise to massive size and then crater before you start thinking of them as fundamentally transient.
You're looking for X10 home automation. It's been around for decades.

I guess I am old. But as you mentioned earlier... Google does this constantly.

I did a year of tech support for Comcast, work from home deal like eight or nine years ago when that was rare. Comcast gateways (modem w/ router built in) have a free WiFi hotspot built in so you can use the internet if you're travelling or whatever. In their case, it was an insane idea to me, because it was a separate WiFi router built in to the modem itself. So you would sometimes find that the router was causing interference to your actual network, it might be on the same channel (it is radio, after all). Crazy idea because you could potentially get DMCA letters since the modem used for both networks was the same, even if the user had no access to your WiFi.
This seems like dumbest of all possible solutions.
