Big friken' laser

Britain says it developed and test-fired a futuristic laser cannon that can shoot drones out of the sky

  • The UK has tested a new laser weapon for shooting down drones.
  • The Ministry of Defense says the weapon uses a high-power beam that travels at the speed of light.
  • It could help defend ships and armored vehicles against drone swarms.
  • Read the second point again.

Welp, if there are aliens, we will now see how much they like having laser beams shot in their general direction. cheeky

That might even be faster than the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow.

In other news, the British Ministry of Defense is currently conducting studies to determine if firing a laser from a swallow will result in the two velocities being combined; fingers crossed.

Rafeal (an Isreali defense company) is developing a similar system.  Obviously it would be highly useful for them to shoot down rockets and drones rather than Iron Dome, which might be $40,000+ a shot!

This of course is a great potential solution to the potential for the massive use of very low cost drones (such as Ukraine and Russia are using in large numbers now) since it wouldn't take that much energy to shot one of those down.

Of course.... up next... reflective drones!

Iron Beam, officially, “magen or”, (Light Shield) is a directed-energy weapon air defense system unveiled at the Singapore Airshow on February 11, 2014 by Israeli defense contractor Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.

Rafael's chairman, Yuval Steinitz, said today: "The system will go into operation in the field within a year and a half to two years from today, and will be integrated into the Iron Dome system and will allow us to greatly improve the protection we have today and will also dramatically reduce costs because most The missiles will be intercepted with a laser and a smaller portion will continue to be intercepted with an iron dome.

Would that be an African or European swallow?

Reminds me of this other laser application to deal with flying pest. Keep in mind that this video is from 13 years ago and technology has advanced.
