Well, I wore out a stihl chainsaw chain today cutting up the trunk of a walnut tree, and low and behold.....Lowes, Menards, Tractor Supply, etc didn't have a single compatible 16" S62 chain.......fml.

Kinda sucks sometimes to own professional equipment in a world full of amateur bullE36 M3.

How can you only have one chainsaw?!? You are underprepared for zombies!

Yup.

Whether I'm at home or at work, I go past Lowe's - two blocks from the shop, then Home Depot - about a mile further, on my way to a much smaller True Value - about three miles away.

Too often, have I wasted time, stopping at one, than the other, to NOT find what I easily grab at TV.

The workers at both big box stores can eat a bag of dicks, for what little they know. TV helpers are always helpful, finding the obscure flat rubber washer (not an O-ring) or spring or whatever I need to get a machine back online.

You can get them cut and riveted to length straight off a reel of pro grade "high kickback" chain at a lot of good hardware stores.

Agreed. Went into my local Menards yesterday and inquired about shower bases they have in stock. An employee actually asked if I need help (usually at this store that never happens) and I told him what I was looking for. I gave him my measurements and he laughed and said, good luck finding that size. He pointed to the whopping three floor examples and, without offering to look it up in the books or on the store computer, he said no one makes that size.

I called the closest mom/pop hardware store with my measurements and he said he will check and get back to me on Tues or Weds. At least the little hardware store that could, is trying to help and doing so without attitude.

Why have more than one when you buy a nice one that rarely goes down. I probably have another chain for it, but its 45min away from where I am.

Also, the no kickback chains can eat a bag of dicks. Bob Costas chains for Bob Costass

I do hate the big stores. Mainly because I could spend a day looking at stuff getting ideals in my head.

However, once you sift through all the food, magazines, and useless crap, you can't even find what you're looking for.

The mom and pop places have little stuff in a pinch, however, they don't always carry what you need and can't get it. I couldn't get the stuff to mount a mailbox at the place down the street. I found everything I needed at Menards.

Actually, that being said, out of all the big box stores, Menards is probably the best.

In reply to SyntheticBlinkerFluid:

They had a bunch of crappy poulon chainsaws, but nothingin the way of a chain that was good or fit.

Menards is a love/hate thing for me. They usually have the biggest lumberyard around, best selection (in terms of box stores) and they carry some good hard to find grocery stuff(Sprecher soda). However, the store is laid out like a motherberkeleying maze, I can never find E36 M3 in there without first asking 3 people after walking past it one isle over 6 times.

Blowes is just meh all around, Hell Depot isn't lit right, creeps me out, I think they're all built on Indian burial grounds or some E36 M3.

Wasn't it a few years ago that Home Depot had the highest death rate out of all retail stores?

Last time I needed to use a chainsaw it was to fell a 40' tree with a 18" trunk and two smaller 25' pine things. We had 4 chainsaws show up. 1 20" gas, 2 16" gas and a puny 14" electric. Admittedly the gas saws where older but between all the issues starting and running they had the little wheenie electric cut more logs than the than any of the gas saws since it never stopped. It made me doubt my manhood usein the electric as my go too any time I mounted the ladder..

But you need at least 2 saws, one for each hand, when you are surrounded by those pesky zombies.

But in all seriousness.... We heat with wood as a primary source so I know how much a saw going down sucks so I keep a stock of chains, files, plugs etc around. My current fleet consists of a Stihl 038 with 20 inch bar, a cute lil Stihl 170 with 16 inch bar that is for the small stuff and a Husqvarna 51 with an 18 inch bar.

I think there may be a junk Craftsman around somewhere.
