Looking at doing a vr6 swap in our 92 GTi, so I did a quick google search found a supposidly complete swap for 500ish. Seem like a good price?

We just picked up a complete running Jetta with a VR6 for $450 so anything is possible but I'd much rather take my chances with a motor still in a car that I can hear run as opposed to one someone else has removed and you really cant tell much about.

I was honestly thinking the same thing. But thought I would ask. Still WWWAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY behind the learning curve on VW's, luckily I've got some reading material coming this week from amazon.

Im an aircooled guy so take anything I say with a grain of salt. Not sayin its a bad deal, just when it comes to modern computer controlled stuff Im leery of anything someone else has pulled. But heck offer him $300 and see what happens, he's been trying to sell for awhile :)

Good price if everything is in good shape. Chances are it's not. The earlier motors are prone to timing chain guide wear. With that kind of mileage it will almost definitely need to be done. Looking at a few hundred in parts alone. Clutch at the same time is a good idea. Those years also still had some overheating/cooling issues, most of the cooling system might need to be replaced.

You'll want to grab the motor, trans, shifter assy, everything for the hydro clutch including the pedal cluster, gauge cluster (and wiring in between), every cooling part you can get a hold of, front crossmember, K frame, etc.

You won't be able to run the Passat front control arms on a mk2 so if you want the big brakes and 5x100 you'll need to grab Corrado or Mk3 VR6 stuff.

I'm sure there's more but that's off the top of my head having built at least one too many Mk2 VR6's

So, dumb question warning!

Is it really worth the swap? I know it's a popular swap, but I was quite pleased with the 8v's pull on a short track this weekend. I was pulling 70-75mph in the straights. Of coarse this was with a nearly completely gutted car. Was running right at 1:10 laps this weekend. where I think the top guys were running right at the low 50's.

on itty bitty street tires and the top guys were running a 600hp viper or race prepped cobra replicas.

Itty bitty now over half bald street tires!

And the cobra's may have been running faster, I'm guessing from their old posted lap times, I don't think anyone was actually timing laps yesterday. I got mine from watching video and trying to reference the timer at the same point each lap.

It's really amazing how much 35ish minutes of flat out driving wore the @#$@ out of the front tires. Backs weren't that bad. I don't know if that means I was driving too hard or the tires just sucked that bad or if I was doing that good a job at keeping the weight transfered out on the front tires. I swear it felt like I was carrying the inside rear tire for most of that last sweeper.

If you're anywhere near the NE...I know someone selling a ratty 95 VR6 jetta for a little more than that, but it'd be a complete car.

Passat a-arms fit an mk2, you just have to run mk3 tie rods and cv joints becasue they make the track wider. They are actually quite a bit better made as well, if you dont mind wider track width its a good upgrade.

Its not really worth swapping in a vr6 though if you care about handling, you would be better swapping in an ABA 2.0 or some type of 16v if you care about turning as well as going fast in a straight line.

They make the track wider, A LOT wider. The tire will stick past the edge of the fender a solid 2" with Passat stuff.

No comments on turning with a VR6, I avoid doing that at all costs.

I like corners! Used to be a member of the straight line church, but I converted. Have taken a few with me as well.

I will ask my friend what year they are, but he has run passat control arms on 3 mk2s, and they have the same track width as mk3 control arms, they are just stronger. It does make the track a bit wider (i think it is .5'' on each side), but with 15x7 wheels and 195-55-15 tires they are still under the fenders. The car in the first pic in this thread has them on it. http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4098385

I drove that car once (not quite that hard though) it really was pretty fun. :) The guy that built it is on his second car since then though. lol

I'm starting to think this may not be a good idea, this is my wife's toy, not mine, I really need to calm down with it, she wasn't feeling well Sat morning when went to the track so I got to have all the fun with it. MAN WAS IT FUN! I'm not wanting some nose heavy straight line beast for her, but, dang it looks like it would be a fun toy. At least untill I get get my 7 sorted out. Maybe the homebrew turbo setup is the way to go for more power.

The red one in the pic i was talking about just had a worn out ABA 2.0 from a Mk3 with a 268 cam and it was still fast enough to be pretty fun. With a supercharger (which i have seen sell for as little as $400) it would be fast enough to be extremly scary. lol Even without the cam it was fast enough to hit 140 mph (I was not in the car when that happened though) lol

I used to turn but it got too expensive!

I can see how extra wide the Passat arms are in that top pic, it's easily 2" wider then stock. The Mk3 arms are only 3/4" wider then Mk2.

I do agree that super cheap turbo 8v has a good fun/$$ ratio. and won't effect the handling. Buy spare transmissions.

In reply to Spinout007:

Sorry...Boston area, and I think ~800, maybe less. And most of that stuff will transfer right over to your car no problem. Even got a set of OEM bbs meshies on it too. I'll check with my buddy this week about it.

Actually, since he's hurting to get rid of it...I betcha you could probably get it for 500. Let me know if you're interested.

Roadwarrior, I think I'm gonna pass for the moment, tell him to throw it up in the 2010 classifieds, just a bit to far away for us. Paul, so you're telling me the tranny is the weak link? I'm thinking if I can dump another 2-400lbs off the car, and add another 100 or so hp, I should be able to reel those Vipers in a bit more.
