I'm looking for suggestions on CAT ET software packages.
Recently I purchased a 2001 Chevrolet C6500 rollback with the CAT 3126b. It runs rough, good enough to use and city drives, but not something I would want to take on a long trip or highway drive. It does have a check engine light, that flashes every 5 seconds when running. I have tried to retrieve the codes using the cruise control method, but nothing happens, so my cruise switch could be dead or maybe there is something else going on. I did reseat the connections on the computer, which helped, but it still feels low on power and there are still codes. I'd like to keep it under 1k, so will be looking at a used or cloned setup. Something like this maybe?

No idea personally, but my Uncle is a Caterpillar tech at NC Machinery. I sent him a message to see if he might know anything.
Great little engine. I had one in a truck that grossed 60 thousand pounds and it pulled like a freight train. I had the 300 hp version but you can chip them up to the 330 hp RV rating. They are HEUI and very susceptible to poor maintenance so perhaps start there. The only issue I ever had was a couple injectors. By poor maintenance I mean dirty oil.

Thanks, an oil and fuel filter change is on the list, so I'll tackle that next week. This one is the 210hp version I believe.
Hoo-Ha. Sorry for the long wait, I finally got an answer. He says:
The CAT ET software is available from the dealerships for about $1200, but he thinks it's a bit overkill to go this route as it's more targeted towards a service department sort of environment. Instead, he said you could probably take the vehicle in to any Caterpillar service department and they could probably pull the code for under $100.
Failing that, he said this engine is old enough that it's "pretty mechanical", so not a lot of computer control compared to the newer engines which makes it very maintenance and user friendly. He did have positive things to say about its reliability.
He's not familiar with the clone programs unfortunately, so he couldnt offer any advice there.
I don't remember when trucks switched over but if it has a standard dongle I have a shop in franklin Ky which is not far (an hour I think) from you that would check the codes for free. We use JPro rather than "make specific" programs since it covers nearly everything.

Excellent, thanks for the info guys. Chandler, I plan to check around locally first, but will let you know if I strike out and want to look into the shop you mentioned. I will also look into JPro because I'd love to just be able to scan it myself.
