With the exposure of Hola as a giant botnet (Source), I gave up on VPNs for a while, but for various reasons I'm looking again. Is there anything out there right now what works as well as Hola did without all the unpleasant side effects?

I use Private Internet Access. It's not free, but it's painless, reasonably quick and not that expensive.
I use AirVPN.
60ish dollars a year, minimum speed and max speed, no protocol discrimination, and they have a policy where they don't keep logs.
I've always been a little leery of the free ones since they're privacy stance tends to be a little weak.
Other than using the Tor darknet as a VPN (which is quite slow), no, there are no good free options. There are good cheap options, sometimes you can get a cheap lifetime membership deal. I got one from ProXPN.
