I'm looking to buy my 11-year old a metal detector. So i went online to look for the best entry-level metal detector. Well, they entry level models I found recommend were $300!
Can anyone recommend a new or used model that would be less than 1/2 that?
I want it to be good enough to actually detect metal, so I'm willing to go above the Toys R Us models.
Bump for DrBoost
I'm interested in getting into metal detecting too, as a non-car hobby. And I need a different hobby for a while that doesn't take up a garage bay.
Think of all the 10mm sockets you could find. ![laugh laugh](https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/static/ckeditor/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/teeth_smile.png)

We made some back in college. Looks like you could easily DIY!

Amazon looks to have a bunch of options. Their most popular is $80.
Garret has always been the top of the line but they are pricey. That's what we sold at the hobby shop I was running.
They used to sell a Ace that was pretty decent for around $125. That was 15 years ago so I would imagine the price has gone up a bit since then.

Well, HF has 2 different models, $40 and $50.
We got a pair of these for our boys last year at ages 10 and 9. They woked, we found some stuff in the back yard. But I think the level of quality is less than what you are looking for.

Yeah, I'd like a little step up from that. But if I don't find what I'm looking for, I think that'll do
Get a pin pointer with it. It makes finding what you dug up a lot easier.
We got a “bounty hunter” tracker iv for the kiddos for Christmas and they’ve had a barrel of fun with it
