I guess I'll follow this up because I'm assuming you guys deeply care about what vacuum I got. I ignored the guy on Reddit; most of his advice boiled down to "get the most expensive canister vac with a bag you can afford", which is exactly what I didn't want. Not looking for a lifetime companion in my home appliances. :P I checked out some of the Eurekas and Hoovers discussed but they were just too big & cumbersome for my place. Instead I ended up with this lovely little Dirt Devil Swerve:
It's not the most powerful vacuum I've ever used but it's perfect for my one-bedroom apartment; the swivel head is a nice feature. And it was $35 in near-mint condition. About a billion times better to use than the giant turdbucket hand-me-down Kenmore canister thing it's replacing.
And yes, I have seen the guy on Youtube moaning about how hard it is to replace the belt on one of these. I am 99% sure any normal person could do it in twenty minutes without berkeleying the whole thing up like he did.

^^ I wanted a Shark but none of the three people selling one on my local site could be bothered to respond to emails or texts/messages. I'm happy with my utterly blatant knockoff.
In reply to Jay:
"on my local site"? What does that mean? We ordered ours online from Wallmart and had it 3 days later.

My local used site of course. Important distinction.
Wait, people buy new vacuums? I always thought they just sort of spawned out of the ether periodically and appeared on Craigslist.

Ive bought 3 in the last decade. a E36 M3ty hoover, a dyson that the ex fought for harder than my child in the divorce, and a shark because it was 1/4 of the price and seems to do welk enough, based on this thread.
In reply to mndsm:
I've bought quite a few, especially when I was back in CA with the wolf, and learned how a lot of 100+ dollar vacuums have a tiny 1 inch accessory hose going from the floor to the canister instead of direct suction like oldschool ones and lots of cheap ones had. With a wolf in the house, I wound up just destroying the ones with a tiny little tube, they'd clog every few feet of carpet, and since getting rid of the wolf wasn't an option(as much as I'd have liked it to be) wound up buying pretty much every vacuum they sold at Target.
