I might have jumped at this a little early. I thought it would be one of those nutter prep threads. But, in reality, it isn't that at all.

Might serve me good to add a few things to last me and the fam a month on our own. I'm not fighting zombies, but I am definitely not fighting fools for a can of soup.

Ramen isn't a bad idea. It has a long shelf life and can be prepared with water and heat. It sure beats the hell out of being hungry until help can arrive. We usually have several packages on the shelf. FEMA response time is 72 hours. You need enough supplies to survive at least that long. Longer if you don't live in a city.

Vice video on doomsday preppers I watched last year. I thought it was honest, the reporter lets them talk.

The first guy thinks doomsday is imminent, but at the end he talks about being prepared if it doesn't come. "Should you buy rice & beans or mutual funds? Yes, you should buy both."

I can't find it now, but I watched another one where a guy was all about the zombie apocalypse and dragged his whole family with him with his teenage daughters rolling their eyes throughout. I think that's the nutter that's stereotyped in this thread.

I think there is a whole spectrum of preppers.  I would say I'm on the one extreme.  I have some food in the freezer and an AWD van that I could live in.  The other end is the zombie/gubmint/nucyulerr apocalypse end.

Nothing wrong with either one.  If the zombies do come, it will be nice to have someone who hoarded some cream of mushroom soup
