My friend loves it! She is best described as "adventure girl" and checks some odd spots. She checked on my property and found that 1/2" wrench I lost in 1976 while working on my 67 Cougar behind the barn......plus a lot of the bolts and stuff!
She did find 4 gold coins while checking around a slightly remote swimming hole in some mountain park last year. She found my old Hot wheels in the woods where my little brother had left them after 30 years. She finds enough to keep it fun.

Ive thought about it. I live in an area that saw some heavy fighting during the War of Northern Agression. I wonder whats in the woods around my house and the creek behind. I dont know the legalities of digging tho.
It's big down here. Real treasure is found, gold, silver, etc from old shipwrecks. After a good storm there are always a bunch of people on the beach, waving the detectors around. Then there is always the lost watches and jewelry, too.
I'm interested in this as well! Always thought that it would be fun to walk around with a fanny pack, headphones, and a metal detector on the beach! 
But seriously, what's the scoop on metal detectors, as in; OK to buy used?, how much to budget for one?, best places to find them?, specs to look for in one? I'm sure there's more "treasure" to be found out there than one might think, even if its only watches, Hot Wheel cars, tools and coins!
A local guy sells White detectors, and was showing me a few. He said the entry-level ones are around $250, but that for ~$350 you really get some nice features.
Someday, when I find a little time, I have to try it.

Maybe. The family has had the same plot of land since the colonial times. She figures people have dropped some neat stuff over the years.
