Well, it's that time of year...
Looking at a 'program' to start and stick to for the new year and CrossFit has come across my radar.

Has anyone tried it with success? Wait - has anyone who was FAT tried it with success?

They offer a free pass for a workout and I'll probably try that before the first of the year, but wanted to get some unbiased opinions here.

I found I couldn't get back into cross fit without being in good shape first. Not to say its not possible, but you would need lots of support.

I never belonged to a crossfit facility however, maybe they keep you motivated.

Crossfit works because you have to be in damn good shape to even start.

Get to 10 pull ups, 50 push ups and enough air to run 3 miles before you try it. Same for P90X - you can do either right from flabby but... it is a soul crushing experience to have to collapse 10 minutes in while the 100lb girl with wrists like toothpicks is banging out another 25 pushups in her 4th set.

I had a buddy of mine try it being not exactly in shape except round....

I really think if you goto one place all the time the greater the motivation to stick to the program as the "regulars" will see you through the rough workouts.

The best thing about CrossFit is the ability to be done in under 30 minutes and not have to wait for equipment or excuses. You will also end up in greater overall shape then just either rail thin from running your ass off or bulking up like a steroided WWE rassler.

Are you fat or are you flabby? There's quite a difference. And that difference will have a strong bearing on your ability to do something like CrossFit. Or even do it without injuring yourself.

Hmm, I can do 100 pushups and run 5 miles without stopping, maybe I should try this.

What is cross-fit, anyway? I hope it doesn't have something to do with autocrossing a hon-duh Fit, because I like my '93 Toyolla too much to trade it in on one.

Two of my good friends are both crossfit instructors here in TX. I occasionally join in on their classes.

I'll politely throw in the fact that memberships are $150/month (for a cheap gym), and that crossfit members tend to get repetitive stress injuries way more frequently than other athletes.

Crossfit has some awesome elements (olympic lifts, lots of compound movements) and some ridiculous elements ("kipping" pullups that shock load your shoulders, timed box jump form make you look like you're in a Prince video)

This. Crossfit has become kind of a new fad among the Army Infantry guys I'm around on a daily basis, and I see more of them coming into the Aid Station with injuries resulting from CrossFit over-exertion than from any other physical training they do (which is quite a bit). Maybe it's just them, but if you're going to do it, make sure you're doing it with good form (which is true with any exercise really -- poor form during exercise will end your day quickly).
