If that one doesn't work out for some reason, I highly suggest KEH or Roberts Camera. They are very honest about their cameras. A bargin graded KEH camera is going to be nicer then a lot of ebay ones rated mint. So you will know it works

I took a short break from garaging and shipped the camera. I'll email back later tonight after dinner and a little more garage time.
I had a KM, which is basically a K1000 with a depth of field feature. I sold it and all my kit to someone on here several years ago. GRMers love their Pentaxes.

Is a Pentax K1000 the NA Miata of cameras?
Is this a class that is done every year ?
I am sure I have a couple, but no idea where........
if this is a continuing need I will box them up and send them out for next years class....
And do they want them with the stock 50mm lens ?

Jon,
The camera showed up and looks great. I am also working on goodies to send back. Thank you so much for your generosity.

This seems to be a camera that the teacher recommends. People buy them and sell them, but I assume that means that the supply is slowly drying up. If you would like to donate some, I can make sure that they get to the teacher. I think the stock 50mm should be fine for the class. It is a beginning class.
There are so many 35mm film cameras at the flea markets - yard sales ,
But if it's not Nikon or Canon no one collects them so they are cheap ,,
I will keep my eye open for them and the couple I have somewhere and make you a care package ,
Glad to see someone still cares about them , and yes I took a photo class in College.....
The K-1000 production moved from Japan to Hong Kong at some point in the 80's. From there it got cloned and rebadged into stuff like the Centon K100. Ref: https://thegashaus.com/2020/12/13/jessops-centon-k100/ and there's others like this out there. I have a Revue AC3 on the shelf to my left; it is hands down a better to use camera than a K-1000 but they're almost free in comparison to what K-1000's go for in good condition. Because nobody but a select few will know what it is.
I think the reason that it seems like the supply is drying up is that people don't want to put basic maintenance into these things. Light seals and the mirror damper pad being bad is a great way to get a camera for not much money. And people are scared of the unknown brands, companies they may not have heard of before that utilized the Pentax K mount. The K-1000 is great because it integrates the aperture selected by the user into the light meter, so that it should meter accurately when shooting something less than wide open, but that's it for assistance to the user. No automatic exposure function. Also they're very reliable overall (though I imagine the light meter system can act up with as old as these cameras are) and a student should be able to work without it if they have a smart phone and a light meter app and an idea of how to deal with that instead of the built-in meter.
FWIW, I recently had my K1000 serviced–clean, lube, adjust–plus the light meter fixed for about $100.
A really cool motorcycle centric gift box arrived today and I've got a few bikes that can use much of it. The mittens and boot covers will be great for cold mornings.
Thanks Matthew!
