My recently graduated daughter is looking at taking a job with Bankers Life selling insurance. Personally I think she's crazy, but I'm willing to support her in whatever she wants to do and keep her fed and housed for a while to get it off the ground. If nothing else, it should be an experience and a stepping stone to something better.
Any of you guys and gals in insurance sales? Any pointers, thoughts, or recommendations?
I think everyone should have a commissioned sales job at least once. Even if you fail miserably at it, you'll get a better understanding of how to deal with salespeople.
is it straight commission ?
Only that people see my past claims experience + Public Relations degree so I get hit up for interviews to do it all the time.
I keep saying no, even though now is the time with money in the bank and a cheap place to stay. If you're good you can make big money with the larger places........but those are very few.

Straight commission, no phone, vehicle, anything allowance.
Personally I see it as a good way to stay broke, but I suck as a high pressure salesman.
I've basically told her to take it if she is interested, but expect to work hard and earn nothing for months.
My very blond daughter had a similar job trying to sell insurance to Hawaiians. She lost a lot of money.
I actually work for a major insurance company. I did sales out of college but on the investment side, and now a marketing manager on the corporate level. I personally hate sales as it's not my personality but the money was great at my younger age. There was no other job at that level of experience that paid as well. Plus the experience led to my career and great opportunities like my move to Seattle in a month. Anyways, she's gonna be working hard and a lot of folks in her office likely get a cut of her commission as that's usually how it's set up for junior positions.

FIFTY.
I applied and was only 1 of 2 selected out of group of 20 to get the job. I declined. Was told I had to pay for my insurance exam and license out of pocket. Was also told it takes about 6 months to a year to get a good monthly paycheck established and to rely on family or savings account to get by.
