Last week I picked up about 100 windfalls and put them in the yard waste. I keep telling myself to get a cider maker.
I only harvested about 3 bushels of apples most of which will become apple sauce and apple butter. We made one apple pie. And 15 Jars of Jelly.
Today We had the same amount of windfalls but less than a bushel of ripe apples.
This will be typical through October. Early November. When I get the last of the honey golds picked.
Right now the MacIntosh is the heavy producer. That and Honey Crisp.
The Northwest Greenly are starting to come in. But those we will be harvesting the October.
Chestnut Crabs are near their peak but I'm the only one eating them. Myself, squirrels, and chipmunks. They are absolutely delicious. Both sweet and tart at the same bite. Extremely crisp with just a hint of cinnamon. The best eating apple ever.
Too bad so few people get to try them. They don't keep at all. 2-3 days at most and they look funny. Smallish. Not an apple looking apple. Yellow, maybe a patch of red but worst of all is they are fuzzy. Not smooth skin. It's hard to take that first bite. But if you do 30 seconds later you're reaching for another to wolf down. Your taste buds want more, more & more!!!! But you can't chew them that fast.
I also have Harrelson's and Granny Smiths. I used to have Red delicious but my neighbor killed that tree because a branch was over on her property.
I also have red cherries and Japanese Plums. Plus black walnuts. Strawberry's and Raspberries. ( if the squirrels and chipmunks are feeling generous).
My wife is great at canning. By Thanksgiving the shelves will be groaning under the loads of fruit and veggies. Mostly gone by Christmas with just enough left over to maybe get to spring. But
