I picked a Fast and Furious type Eclipse that has a bottle. Mike is sending a monster turbo. I think I know where this is now heading. Just finished most of the flat black chassis pieces. Next up is some detail painting. Should there be lots of chrome underneath? Hmmm...

Resupply incoming!
Visibility over the Hemi would be quite limited:
Dat stance, though.
You know what really grinds my gears? The price of spray paint. I started doing the math (ALWAYS a bad idea) on the cost of building a single $35 dollar kit and it really got out of hand quickly.
This led me to the idea of airbrushing cheap acrylic paint. Anyone have experience with this? I found some very useful Youtube videos that show the process of dilution and tips on getting the paint to adhere well to plastic.
I don't have an airbrush but I'm willing to pony up the cost up front if I can get good results from cheaper paint and lower the cost in the long run. I also like to paint miniature figures so it would be useful there as well. I also like the idea of airbrushing less toxic acrylics in the heated basement spray booth as opposed to spray cans in the cold garage.
I have airbrushed the Tamiya bottle acrylics with good success using their thinner. I have not tried artist type canvas painting acrylics, even though I have a large inventory. The only spray cans I use are the $$$ Tamiya as the results are so good. I also have a lot of real autobody acrylic lacquers in inventory from up to 50 years ago. That often directs my color choices.

A few guys in my club had good luck with cheap acrylics and blue windshield washer fluid as a thinner. I haven't tried it myself yet so I don't know how easy it is.
So this past week has been a doozy. SWIMBO went to the hospital to have her knees chopped off and replaced with titanium super knees so she can be reborn as the SWIMBOT 2001. She'll be terrorizing cities from New York to Japan soon enough but for now she needs me to help her with just about everything.
I did get a few minutes to work on the kit today tho. She got her final coat of color.
I don't know why it looks like so much arse right now. I did a test panel earlier and it looks like this but once it gets its clearcoat it explodes in metallic goodness. weird, but ok.
I also got the wheels and tires finished up.
Body coloured centres and white barrels. I think they look sharp.
Lastly I decided to put the body decals on now. They're old and a bit yellowed, I'm hoping burying them in the clear will help but I have exactly no idea what I'm doing, so only time will tell.
Those decals were the whole reason I built this car in the first place.

My restock came courtesy of Javelin. Monster turbo, C7R parts, and 1/20 scale pieces to use on the green Corvette in holding. Did I mention the big turbski? About the size of a peanut M&M.
Box o' goodies. That's C7R parts. The wheelbase matches that of the Nova I stole the rear tubs out of. Hmmm ....
Pro street needs back seat delete with aluminum panels. Will make roll cage too. I think. Sure. Plenty of time.
Progress?

Those sure look like polystyrene panels to me I frequently use actual aluminum flashing for things like that. It is thinner than the thinnest styrene you can buy and it folds once without cracking.

Like, from the hardware store? I could be persuaded to get that. I have aluminum tape I was going to cover this with.

according to my math(?) 3/32 brass brazing rod is 1.875" diameter in 1:20 scale for your cage. :) Not sure how you would glue it together (actually weld it?), but I built a custom plexiglass bodied model car from scratch once and used super glue to assemble the tube frame which worked out great until a friend came over to visit once with his hellion kids and it lasted about 10 seconds after they found it and smashed it into the wall.

Oh, that's a nice shine! What did you use as a clear coat?
In reply to vwcorvette (Forum Supporter) :
Yup, the stuff they sell at Lowe Depot or your local building supply. I do not for sure know what alloy it is, but it behaves like 1/2 hard 3003. I have not tried to anneal it. I should!

Bottom of the chassis is just about done. Need a couple little front suspension bits and the exhaust. Next time I work on this should see the cage start to take shape.
Stop me if you heard this one before, but I haven't started bodywork yet other than attaching the nose to the body. On the plus side, I have ordered the decal set so there's one thing that won't be left to the last minute.

I've been using disposable pie pans. You can use a toothpick to form bead rolls into them and then a couple drops of CA to skin the plastic panels you've already put in.
I posted about relocating the wastegate but I think I'm dumb and that won't actually work exactly. I always forget how big a turbo is and that it has two halves. So I might have to turn the wastegate to point down or sideways but it still might sorta work. I dunno. This is like trying to fit 10 pounds of E36 M3 in a 5 pound bag.

Stickers!
The one thing I'd like to have a decal of but have no way of knowing how to pull off is to do something like the THUNDERBIRD that goes on the front air dam, but it saying EXPEDITION. I don't know if there's some sort of decal sheet I can run through a laser printer or what, but I already know my handwriting/paintwriting won't do it justice.
I have now done everything that can be done with the chassis aside from the cage (minor process I'm sure). I don't want to get too excited too soon, but as of now it has both its oil line going between the oil pump and the bottom of the radiator, and the upper radiator hoses. The lower radiator hose doesn't come into play till a later instruction, so there's still a chance that will find a way to disappear on me or prove impossible to install, but for the time being, I'm batting a thousand with cooling hoses and that never happens.
That squiggly line on the transmission tunnel is a dog hair that got caught in what was otherwise a very good base paint job. It's mildly infuriating, but it's part of the car now, can't do anything about it now.
