FWIW, I've seen construction picking up around Atlanta. Mainly high-end stuff. Tearing down old houses, putting up custom (not McMansions) in their place.
That's a market I am very experienced in. I may be spending some time up there to check things out.

Wish I had something useful to add about where to find work. All I've got is hope that you find something good and quickly, and that if the advice I've gotten from you as I flail my way through construction projects is any indication, you know what you're doing. I know there are people for whom that counts, so here's hoping you find them, stat.

Probably a bit further than you want to relocate but all the destruction from the hurricane up north has lead to a great need for people with your skill sets.
Even if its something you just want to do until you land something more local let me know and if I can help out up this way I will.
I grew up in NJ. I've also driven that far to pick up a car.
If something doesn't open up in a couple weeks, there is a good chance I will be heading that way. Do you know of specific needs?

Paul, you have the skills, and you've proven before that you know how to market them. You've also proven that you're resourceful enough to turn junk into treasure, so I'm confident you'll be able to generate income until you find your next position.
Thank you for the words of encouragement.

JThw8 has a good point.
See what it would take to get a crew, tools, and yourself into NJ/NY to be able to do construction. Should be a solid year-18 months of work.
I can put a crew together very quickly. I own all the tools necessary for a crew of 20 or more.
I am not licensed or insured in NJ, but could probably figure out that part.
Don't have the contacts.

Sorry to hear this Paul. Not sure if you do the commercial side...We just built a hospital in Newnan, GA. (just south of Atlanta) It's already full, and will probably be a continuous project for the next several years in updates, facilities management and upgrades.
I've got lots of commercial experience. Are you saying you have work? Who would I follow up with?

Hey, speaking of...the construction of a hospital is just getting started here locally: http://www.peachcounty.net/hospital.cfm
It's about a mile west off I-75 on exit...146 I think ( Centerville/Warner Robins)
I don't have any info on whose handling it, but if you want I can go by the site and try to get contact info. It's close enough you could be home easily on days off.
Also, there's a law enforcement training facility still building outside Perry, Guardian something or other. They're building acres and acres of simulations - flooded housing, collapsed buildings, and underground subway complete with train - several millions in investment. Might want to check into them as well.

How do you feel about Canada? I know that both British Columbia and Alberta have been recruiting construction workers extensively in California. Lots of growth -- and we're a pretty great place to live and raise a family.

I would have no idea how to cross the border semi-permanently. Where would I begin?

Well, we've just revamped our immigration system to put more emphasis on skilled trades:
Changes to Immigration
And there is this:

Oh yeah... that would make ME an immigrant!
Sorry, having worked most of my life in an industry that has a large immigrant influence, I thought you had were linking to stuff about immigrants to the US.
So, that would make me a Redneck Mexican, or some such thing, eh?
I don't know how construction jobs work specifically, but my favorite job search engine is Indeed.com. Hang in there and hope you find something soon!

Don't know of any needs specifically just that there's a whole lot of rebuilding to be done up here. I remembered you were from NJ originally, but you escaped, not sure you'd want to come back, at least not long term ;)
If you do find you are going to come up this way, just let me know what I can do to assist.
nobody escapes NJ. I tried twice and got sucked back in.. all of my friends who left came back.. even my father, who spent 10 years in Mass and now 2 in Florida is coming back

If it wasn't for my wife refusing to leave I'd be gone tomorrow. At least out to PA, to stay near my job, south bound if I didn't have the job either.
I moved to Pa for 4 years... HATED it. I was actually happy to get back to NJ. The people in the Reading to Lancaster region are the shiniest and happiest people you will meet. One of those places were if your grandfather, your father, and you were not born there.. you don't belong here.. Berkley Berks County!
I did like Dolphin county though.. those people seemed nice

Sounds like Ohio. It took 10+ years for it to suck me back but I did come back. I do like it here, though, otherwise I would leave.

Free for 8 years! (well, 6 if you count time in college with residency in another state)

They are calling it a layoff, not termination, so you will have a hard time filing for unemployment. That's a lousy move.
My understanding is the opposite. I sincerely hope you are very wrong.
Here in NJ.. a layoff is immediate unemployment.. termination, if you get benefits at all, takes a couple of weeks.
+1, this should be a case of instant unemployment benifits Paul. It sucks to do, but if you have to so you can get by, that's why you've paid into the system.

I hate to sound like a flounder, there is something which need to be clear about UIB: the employee does not pay any part of the UI premium. The employer has the right to opt in or out, they pay a premium based on the number of employees. If someone who worked for this company applies for and gets UIB and the company has paid those premiums, the state pays the UIB out of their pool. If the company did NOT pay premiums and the employee gets UIB, then the COMPANY has to pay the benefit to the state who then turns around and pays the beneficiary. The company can appeal the decision but they better have their ducks in a row.
