My buddy got hired full time into the Army (he used to just be national guard) and he's based about 30 or so miles south of Atlanta. He says there is nothing to do.
What Non-Car guy things is there to do in and around Atlanta? He's bored out of his mind on his time off.
I forgot to ask him where exactly he's located, so I will find out to pinpoint where he is.
The only site south of Atlanta I can think of is Ft. Benning. (my wife was born there)

Whether it's Ft. Benning or not, have him go to the MWR Office, Morale, Welfare and Recreation. They offer cut rates on campers, renting of boats, canoes, etc. They can also point him toward different clube on post, hunting, shooting, bowling, baseball, just about anything. The bigger the post, the more stuff they offer. If it's not Benning, go to the MWR Office on whatever the post is called, they can help.

Atlanta has a lot of activities to offer a person. In order to avoid typing out a huge laundry list of items that your friend may not care about can you let us know what type of activities your friend is into for use as a starting point?
Honestly, it doesn't sound like your friend is trying very hard. Granted, being 30 miles south of downtown in a sea of suburban sprawl isn't going to be the world's fair or anything, but it isn't like bikini-clad hotties are randomly asking me to go for a ride on their jet-boat in the middle of the city either. ![](/media/img/icons/smilies/cool-18.png)
My point: it sounds like he's in the suburbs, so he's going to have to look for what is actually going on in-and-around the city. There are always tons of clubs, concerts, restaurants, & shopping to try out. Not to mention the random fun activities like skeet shooting & karting.
Man, he should be loving it. Every base I was on, with the exception of Okinawa, was 30 miles out side of the middle of nowhere.
Ok so he is located at Ft. Gillem which is right in the ATL south suburbs (the way he talked it sounded much further south), which apparently is located in the ghetto according to him.
He likes fishing, gun ranges, museums, hiking, camping, etc.
I feel like I'm filling out his Eharmony profile. ![](/media/img/icons/smilies/crazy-18.png)
I'm going to give him Dan's suggestion of the MWR.
MWR is good as stated before. He is in the 'hood and most things he wants to do are north of Atlanta.
There is an airshow on Sept. 28-30th. The Canadian Snow Birds will be there ![](/media/img/icons/smilies/cool-18.png)
If you like hiking, Stone Mountain may be a bit touristy, but there's a lot of side trails in the park that don't get much use. There's also Arabian-Davidson Mountain and Kennesaw, which are way less touristy.
So he tells me there's no MWR on base because half the base shut down.
So back to the drawing board. ![](/media/img/icons/smilies/whatthe-18.png)
However, he found a Civil War Museum and battlefield.

Yeah, there is plenty of that around. Stone Mountain is a good choice as stated previously.

Sounds like he found Kennesaw; it's a bit of a drive from Ft. Gillem only because he'll have to negotiate cross-town traffic. Unfortunately, he's located in Clayton County, a poster-child picture of corruption, violence and decay. For the record, years ago I lived about 10 miles from the base; NO WAY would I live anywhere near that place now.
On the plus side, he's only a few hours from the N Ga mountains where there are lots of opportunities for outdoor activities and lots of history.. Stone Mountain is pretty good but really "touristy".
Maybe you could get him to join the forums and let us know what he is really looking for?
