There was a weather girl on a local news station a while back. Good home town girl that fit right in, easy on the eyes, great personality, not a provocative dresser by any means but just say amply blessed up top and showed enough cleavage. You could watch the weather updates every ten minutes and still not know the forecast... because of them amples.

While I don't know the standards for hiring television news personalities, EEO and all, I'd bet looks have a lot to do w/ it.

I have gotten to meet a number of tv and with the exception of Abe Vigoda and maybe Jerry Orbach they are pretty much all better looking than regular people and stay that way for a long time. I guess having free time and people to take care of your skin does wonders for your appearance. One thing that really surprised me is how much makeup a local tv news person needs as they age I've seen some anchors come out on breaks with Presidential levels of color slathered on. The one exception is my favorite weather person Linda Church. She's perfect and as nice a person as you'll ever meet.

But, by this rational, we'd never have, Jackie Gleason, Ruth Buzzi, John Belushi, Natalie from The Facts of Life, or Fred Flintstone.

Be careful what you wish for.

Spend some time watching British TV shows. Yes, there are some where the main characters are good looking (Coupling and Dr Who, for example), but there are also plenty of (IMHO) average looking actors in starring roles (rather than as supporting characters).

In reply to Ian F:

We're on season 3 of Doc Martin, really enjoy the show, but can not wrap my head around how any character played by Caroline Catz (Giggity!) would willingly choose to be with that Shrek looking fella playing Dr. Martin. So yes, they do choose some interesting looking folks for lead roles.

The producers & directors have a certain look or type they want for a character. You can be the most fabulous actor and not get the part because you don't fit what they are looking for.

But occasionally someone comes along that is so good or different that causes them to change their minds.

Around here there's one TV station with old ugly people on the news, but all those people have been there for 30 years or longer so people have grown to trust them

And I'll be the advertising shown is focused towards viewers who tend to be trusting of news anchors who've been on TV for 30 years.

Why do people say Janis Joplin was ugly? I'm not sure she was. Face appears very attractive. Not so sure about thr whole hobo look....but I never hAve been.

Conversely I have been told on several occasions, especially as of late, that I am attractive and of a stock that women desire. I find this baffling as all get out. Apparently, the whole long hair beard thing is what a lot of them are into. I just did it because I hate making small talk during hair cuts. And shaving.

Oh god No! Not a world without the amazing imact of those people! Not that I said or implied anything remotely similar to what you're saying. I'm thrilled that talented people make it in this world irrespective of their appearance, that has Zero to do with what I said.

I Am saying that the flinstones is a worse show with a 250lb betty and wilma all else being equal.

I think all sesto is saying, is another version of what Red Green said. "If they don't find you handsome, at least they can find you handy" I don't think he meant you have to be attractive to be valuable. But you have to be something.

I don't know... I wouldn't call her a model, but to me she's above average.

Melania Trump, however, I don't really find attractive at all and have felt that way since I first saw her. Not sure why, but I've always been more attracted "girl next door" types.

1000% of the time. For music, for looks, for personality. And I've dated dirty hippy chicks, I know what kind of crazy comes along with it. And I'll still take it over snobby plasticized modern celebrity every single day of the week.

Barack and Michelle Obama and the girls have always had a good sense of style. It's not bad to see that being carried on with the new first family. I think both families arent bad looking (excluding the dads).

Hopefully the new first lady is as easy to talk to as Michelle. Ive had a few in person conversations with her and you'd never think she was someone "important", very down to earth and funny. Ive also has coworkers who worked for the white house communications agency who say the same about Barack and G.W.
