Does anyone have a recommendation on who offers relatively good rates for extra / weekend cars?
We are about to become a 2 driver / 4 car household (truck for the boat & dogs, miata track car, and two DDs). Married, home owners, good driving records.
I'm currently with Progressive, including 3 cars, a boat, and a motorcycle. Adding the 3rd car increased our total auto premium by roughly 50%: essentially no credit is given for the fact that we can only drive 2 of them at a time. We put the "snapshot" device into the one that sits the most, but the projected premium reduction is only about 7%. The car sits 5 days/week if not more, but the beeper for hard braking when my wife drives has caused more marital strife than the discount is worth to me. I think if I put the snapshot in the Miata they would drop us.
I figure one of the major carriers has to have a risk model that is weighted more towards the drivers than the cars? Neither our area, nor our cars, are particularly theft-prone.
We have Erie, they offer discounts for multiple vehicles and they have been really easy to work with.

I'm with Shelter and the majority of our cars are on classic/collector policies. As long as they are stored in a locked garage and limited use you could make a case for it. My 911 went from over 1200 a year for full coverage to a little over 200 with an agreed upon value. I couldn't afford to keep the number of cars we have if it wasn't for the limited use policies.

State Farm gives me fairly substantial multicar discounts. Most of my cars are indicated as 'pleasure use'.
I have State Farm as well, been good to me for many years. I have checked around and no one has better rates for me than SF.
Been with State Farm for as long as I have been driving. I can't find anyone that can match their rates with my longevity bonus. I used to get a multi-line discount in addition to my multi-car discount, when I had my house through them, but they don't have house insurance in FL, so I lost that.
You're going to have to shop around. What one persons' rates are with one company will have absolutely no bearing on the rate you would get. Far, far too many variables. Progressive may be super cheap for one person, but expensive for another.
Make some calls, ask for quotes online.
I use travelers, find a agent who sells multiple lines and they will help you out.
Get a broker. They'll do the legwork for you, including companies you've never heard of.
USAA if you are eligible.
I had a broker friend who was about to try selling me some insurance till he found out what I had, then he just laughed and said that nobody else was even close.
Don't you have fleet plans down there? If I licence a minimum of three power units (as opposed to trailers) I get a sixty per cent deduction.

Same here, I found a local agent and am very happy with them.

this …. multi cars, multi line, longevity bonus ….
of course in NC the companies are regulated pretty tightly … (for price of ins)

As mentioned already, ERIE.

Exactly. My insurance agent switched my policy to Progressive about a year ago, and the multi-car discount was much better than my previous insurance.

Note that brokers (at least, the ones here in California) don't do the big companies, State Farm, Farmer's, and Allstate, so if you want to price compare those you need to do them yourself.
Seems I saw somewhere that Hagerty would write policies for more modern limited use vehicles as well as the classic stuff. I've been very pleased with their classic program.

In my experience, that's been no loss. State Farm was being very greedy with Janel's policies before we moved them. And I know my broker can get Progressive, as she had me with them for a while. Now I'm with a company that doesn't pay for animated gecko ads, so I don't have to pay for animated gecko ads.
i like SafeCo. i like them because i can call them any time and stop/start my policy. i have insurance on 4 cars. i DD 2 of them. when i want to drive one of the extra cars, i just call them and change the car i want from 'stored' to 'active'. no limit on how often i do this. the rates are good, they offer classic car insurance at agreed value to people under 25 (something Hagarty doesn't do), and i never have to wait more than a minute or two to get a human on the phone.
and their claims process is by far the fastest i have ever dealt with.

My experience (again, in California, and insurance varies WIDELY from state to state) was that when I was 22 and single, State Farm wanted three times the amount as other companies, but now that I'm over 40 and married they come in substantially lower. My combined policy (auto, home, earthquake, umbrella, etc) was over a thousand dollars less per year from State Farm than the best my broker could do.
That's certainly not been my experience. IIRC, we saved enough moving from State Farm (as married adults) to cover the home insurance. At least two of my coworkers had similar experiences going from a big name brand to a broker. So it's obviously worth shopping around.

Uhhhh, how does that work with state registration? If I tried that, I would have to re-inspect and re-register my car every time I turned the liability off.
Different states. Some only require insurance if the car is actually driving, not in order to get a plate.
I am with State Farm and have everything from daily driving to storage to collector car status on cars. Hell they insured me at 16 with a Porsche. The rates are good and I deal with a local agent.
