What's the grassroots way to deal with an automatic transmission that's starting to act a little funny. Slipping a little (just a little, for now) though there are no obvious leaks, and the dipstick reads full and the fluid smells fine. Never towed with, not abused, just 128000 miles of commuting and road trips. Fluid's been changed per owners manual instructions, it was/is due again, but I've been advised not to if it's acting up, which makes sense, I get that.

This is a 2002 Montero Sport- you guys helped me figure out a weird coolant-with-junk-in-it-even-though-headgasket-is-fine mess a couple months back, thought I'd throw this out and see what comes back.

My options, apparently: 1) replace with junkyard transmission of unknown provenance ($)

2) Pay for somebody to rebuild what's there ($$)

3) purchase/install warranteed/remanufactured transmission ($$$?)

4) ???

Change filter and add fluid, no more flushes. See how long it lasts.

In the past I have "rebuilt" transmissions with just a fluid and filter change. Worth a try.

You can try some Trans-X. Might as well try to treat it chemically before tearing stuff apart.
