I skimmed the latest copy of CAR today and they had a small "story" about an upcoming model that BMW is readying for a 2013 debut....a smaller version of the 5GT, as in a 3 series hatchback. Unlike the "original", the 3 series car will be based on a 3 series coupe body and will (coincidentally?) have 3 doors. Get it? The 5GT had 5 doors....
No word on whether this model will ever go on sale in North America...I wouldn't hold my breathe.
A 3-series fastback coupe? That doesn't sound too bad to me.

5 Series GT with 5 doors
3 Series GT with 3 doors
1 Series GT with 1 door?
7 series GT with 7 Doors!!!
Just got a 318ti a month ago - Other than PO goofiness, I'm really liking the layout and functionality. Just needs more box flares - oh, and power.
I'll have to dig my latest Roundel out as it has a small story and a phot of it. IIRC, not a 3-series hatch so much as a slightly smaller 5GT.
oldtin:
the same issue of CAR had a small "blurb" on the 2nd gen. of the ti....the 2002-2004. Those were available from the factory with 6 cylinder engines and the rear styling was slightly different from the model of the mid-late '90s. Looking sort of like a Henry J but with a 3 series front clip.
The 3 GT (or whatever it's called) will NOT have 5 doors, that's why I don't exactly consider it a smaller 5GT....and BMW is not going to market it the same way either.
