I don't get the Obama reference.  I couldn't find that name in the article. Did he do something or is it just an attempt to blame all the world's woes on the Boogeyman?

Company spends $2 Billion to buy a 60 year old established brand, then wants to change the name because it's suddenly offensive. Seems dumb to me.

Does the name really matter when you choose a convenience store? I thought the whole idea was that you went there because it was "convenient".

"Thanks Obama" is a humorous reference to a time when Obama was blamed for anything and everything that went wrong. Example:

Tom: "dude, sorry I'm late. I had a flat tire."

Jerry: "thanks Obama!"

99% here did, one got butt hurt though. 

There used to be a prominent local businessman called Gay Johnson. We had Gay Johnson's gas stations, restaurants, tire shops, etc. I think the tire shop was the last to go, about 18 years ago. Not because of outrage, but because the businesses all eventually sold. Tire shop became a TDS branch, gas station became a Conoco, etc.

Reading the article - Maverick is a very strong brand. They've set themselves apart from generic convenience stores and are consistently above average. Kum and Go is indistinguishable from any other convenience store. If I were looking to expand one of those brands, I'd be using Maverick too.
