I'll be visiting Chicago for business and have a 4-day weekend free with a rental car, 7/29 - 8/1. Are there any "car guy" sites close by or worth a day trip?

Volo would be a decent trip, probably about an hour out. Indoor carting at k1 in buffalo grove or Addison, either one about 20-30 minutes.
No autocrosses I'm aware of that weekend, but check out some of the smaller groups--BMW club, vw, etc.
I'll be out of town that weekend, otherwise would try to meet up to grab a beer. I recommend Romanos in Rosemont, which will be close to you--my favorite pizza (Chicago thin crust) in the world.
I can vouch for K1Speed. Those karts are fun. Be sure to bring your own helmet.
Museum of Science & Industry is a good time.
Volo is entertaining, just be aware that it is a very "PT Barnum" type car museum. The Grams know how to market though, so it is worth the few bucks to tour it.
You did say you would have a rented car, so go find a copy of "The Package," starring Gene Hackman, watch the chase scene, and govern yourself accordingly.
Not Friday night? Too bad as the Downers Grove Car Show is pretty decent.
Sure it's 4-5 hours north and you should expect massive crowds but someday we all need to go to Oshkosh for the annual flyin.

There is also a sausage fest going on - north side of Chicago.

I'll be at a BMW CCA HPDE at Blackhawk Farms in South Beloit on Monday 7/31. Another chapter is running an HPDE the same day at Autobahn Country Club in Joliet.
In reply to Appleseed:
I'd second the Museum of Science and Industry also. They have some automotive exhibits, but the U-boat is a must.

Plus you can pick up whatever underground substance you want there--anything from Mary Jane to chlamidya!
Thanks for the input! I spent half a day at Volo and made it to a cruise night in Lombard. Both were awesome and I finally saw a Velorex in the flesh.
You'll need to log in to post.
