rob_lewis wrote: SE Bikes has a whole retro line. Most of them are bigger wheel size. If I can commit to riding my cruiser for a month, I'm going to get the Big Ripper. I won't buy it if it's just going to collect dust. Eddie Fiola came ou with an updated Performer that looks pretty cool, too. A couple of years ago, some was making an update Mongoose with the head tube gusset and hole. Can't remember who. Greg Hill still has his GHP line of race bikes. I've seen a couple up close and are really sweet. I have a GT Mach One frame in my garage at the moment, just like I rode as a high school freshman. I laid it next to my son's Redline Expert and the GT was shorter....... Now I know why we had laid back seatposts and long stems. -Rob
That performer...jesus. thats hot.
The Mike dominguez thing makes me think of the other bike i desire besides a freeform z....i need a strike zone dominguez. Though.....a performer in pink with white tuffs could do it.
I have a retro SE Floval Flyer. Love it. The current Floval Flyer is kind of modern, though. My bike is pretty much just like the current So Cal Flyer.

Sounds good. We had a good time during the May meet-up. If people keep coming, I'll keep organizing them.
And since this has turned into a talk about old school BMX stuff, if you're into that kind of stuff you gotta go to next year's BMX Spring Fling in St. Augustine, Florida. The 14-year-old version of me never though that I'd hang out with Stu Thomsen--like, we hung out and chatted for an hour or two. About what? Stuff. He's about to retire, so it was a lot of life stuff. We also hung with Mike Buff, Todd Lyons, Brian Blyther, the owners of Skyway and a ton of other cool dudes.
We--as in my friend Chelsea and I--rode to lunch with Mat Hoffman. Just the three of us.
Pics or didn't happen?

Dang, Hoffman looks like an old man, which makes ME feel old. I remember when he was just a goofy kid from Oklahoma and blowing people away at 13.
Love Planet BMX. I REALLY want this, but again, can't justify the money on something I'll never have time to ride....

Mat Hoffman is almost my age so, yeah, he's up there.
At the Spring Fling Stu Thomsen rode one of those new replicas all weekend. It was pretty rad. I think it's too tall for me, though.
The new Mike Buff bike looks really cool, too.

Anyone have experience riding something like that? How would it handle a 6" 200lb guy trying to relive his youth by doing dumb things that will likely result in injury? Basically can I ride it like my old DYNO Compe?
Funny, the last time i hears todd lyons, ue rode for huffy. It was late 90s early 2000s xgames ajd he did the most ridiculous wallride ive ever seen.
A good friend still has his original performer hanging out in his garage. Since ive been riding my old bmx bike again ive looked around a bit for one of the early dynos ( yes i know it was gt's cheap bike but lots of good memorys).
Ive also been watching alot of the old bmx dvd's i own. Old for me is early 2000's like my haro.

So, for me as a 5'11" guy who weighs twice what I did BITD, I'm assuming a bigger bike will be more comfortable. Plus, it'll give me a chance to just cruise on it for now until I drop a few (hundred) pounds and start having more fun.
Depends on what you want to do whether it works for you. If you're wanting to do endos, grasshoppers, boomerangs, etc on it, it's probably too big. You'd be able to cruise skateparks, but probably not do air tricks on it. It's just a lot of bike to move around.
If you want to do that, the Mike Buff edition would be much better.
Or a 22" like Wallens has, or even a 24".

Todd is still a crazy rider, but now he's also the main guy at SE.

My last bmx before cars was a 1994 compe. I would be a bald faced liar if i said i wasnt just looking for its clone on ebay.
Good question about bike size. I tried out my friend's 26, but it was way, way too big for me. But note that he's like 6-5 and I'm 5-8.
I had been riding my 24 for years and love it but, yeah, I'm a 22-inch convert--a little more room and stability than a 20 but it still feels like a 20.
My 22 is built around an S&M ATF frame and I just love it--totally responsive and stiff.
Here's the frame:
And here's my complete bike:
And, yes, I went with chrome forks for a little bit of a retro vibe.
And a PS: I have the shorter of the two 22-inch frames offered. It's perfect for me. Cranks are 180mm Profiles, and those are 8-inch S&M Slam bars. Grips are A'me Tri, the best ever. Wheels and tires are from Revenge (part of S&M). Just about everything else comes from the Shadow Conspiracy catalog.
Im 5'11" 250 and still feel more comfortable on a 20 inch then a 24. My 20 has a 20.5 inch TT.
@mndsm mine was a used 96 dyno. Last bike i owned that had a leanback seatpost. Used a grinder too clearence the rear drop out for a 14mm axle after i got tired of changing axles and hammering the dropout straight.
In reply to dropstep:
Yeah, i had the layback, the 4 piece kneesavers, the whole bit. I miss that bike. Sold it in a fit of rage.
I just starting my 20 a bit--a DK ProXL. I'm in the middle of tweaking something right now.
After being away from the 20 for a while, it does feel a bit twitchy. But I have only been out on it a few times. I was going to take it for a spin this evening, in fact, but the cranks came loose about 50 feet from my driveway. Turns out that someone forgot to replace a washer the last time everything was apart. Duh.
Rough measurements show that my Skyway's front triangle is almost an inch longer. I think I'll like that a lot.

Mine sat in someone elses garage for 7 years. I bought it back and painted/replaced some parts and was amazed at everything that came loose first ride. Its been enjoyable riding again i just need to buy a set of pegs since i got the bike back missing one of the two
So, this is interesting. I have been on that Old School Mags site the past few evenings. I guess I could turn around and dig out my old mags, but, well, there's stuff in the way.
I just realized something: I'm pretty sure that this is the first BMX mag that I bought: BMX Plus! from January 1983.
I now have older mags, but pretty sure that the first one for me.
Two interesting things:
There's a piece about a 22-inch BMX in there.
And, on page 53, there is a piece about the Badlands skatepark. That is the very image that has been in my head for my Skyway build. I want to build a bike that would have been in that picture.
22"!? Saints preserve us, the 29er/27.5 thing from mountain biking is contagious! (Says the guy who just bought a 29er)
Re: the original topic, "Rad" will probably always be my favorite BMX "video" (wish I could acquire a copy; watching it again might cure me), and that 2009 Danny MacAskill video is probably my favorite piece of cycling video ever... MacAskill rides a bike more beautifully than just about anybody does anything.
Anyone wanna buy my (formerly DILYSI Dave's; provenance, yo!) Hutch Exel? while we're talking about the shortcomings of vintage BMX bikes?
