My pick is 1991s Red Hot Chili Peppers:
Still doing drugs (not advocating) and Flea was on point. I was a 20yo punk rocker that listened to all genres and my mind blew the first time I heard this album.
If I posted this before I don't apologize. I came home from work and the Mrs. was playing it.
Bring it.
In reply to David S. Wallens :
That would be my only objection to my statement, but I was not as blown away by badmotorfinger as I was with BSSM. Love me some Chris though. As a huge advocate of mental health awareness I wish I could have given him a hug and let him know to not let the hard days win.
In reply to preach :
True statement: I can only take RHCP in small doses–been that way for 30+ years.
But Soundgarden? Put that on repeat all day. Any album, up through the last one.
And, yeah, wish I could have been there for him as well. Check in on your buds.

Nevermind or Badmotorfinger? Is that our Iron Maiden or Judas Priest question?

I ask new members of my crew a couple questions.
1. What is your walk up song. (Mine is Stayin Alive by the BeeGees)
2. Elvis or The Beatles? (Elvis)
3. AC/DC or Motorhead? (Motorhead)
You learn a lot about someone with those three.
Badmotorfinger and Judas Priest for me. Though the Iron Maiden artwork is phenominal.
It's a close race between Nevermind, and Garth Brooks Ropin the Wind. That's the CD where I suddenly wasn't the only person I knew listening to country music.
I was gonna say Pearl Jam "Ten", but I think that genre is well represented. So I propose Sarah McLachlan "Fumbling Toward Ecstacy".
I was a teenager going into the 90s. So forever and always 90s music will be top tier to me, I recognize this is nostalgia talking but that's how human brains are wired.
And let me tell you, going from a sheltered, preacher's kid upbringing, and buying Blood Sugar Sex Magik and listening to it through over and over again ... that was a mind opening experience for me. It's gonna be hard for me to argue against that album being "the best" because at 16 it blew my mind and put it back together again completely differently.
My first "big boy" music purchase, CDs to fill by new 5-disc Technics CD changer:
RHCP - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Queen - A Night at the Opera
Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour
Voivod - Nothingface
Nitzer Ebb - Ebbhead
To this day you can start any one of those albums and I'm going to want to listen to it all the way through. Now, I have wildly diverse musical taste and can find something to enjoy about almost any music, but damn to this day I'm greatful to my brother for helping me pick out those five albums. 16 year old me was a new person that day, I'll say.
I still buy CDs and my latest was the St Vincent album Born Screaming. That's a great disc and you all should listen to it.
No whiffs on the list so far. Well done everyone.
I'll say:
I dare you to find me the throwaway track on this album. Even the tracks that didn't get heavy rotation in commercial sources found their way into soundtracks, samples and like every movie trailer from 2004-2011.
Honorable mention

I will agree with this.
