Trying to get a jump on my Christmas shopping this year. Who doesn't enjoy getting a code reader in their stocking? I can't think of anyone!
So, what's out there? What works better for VW? Budget is 100 clams. I bought my Actron Pocket Scan from Pep Boys ten or fifteen years ago for $79, and it's good enough.
Just OBD2? Just grab whatever's cheap. I've got a free one that came with a more advanced scanner, and for OBD2 codes there's no difference. If you want something that can do VW-specific stuff, and I would think that you would, it looks like there are a few options on Amazon right around that $100 mark.
So, the ANCEL VD500, for instance?
That should work, though it looks like the VD700 might be worth the bump for livestream and freeze-frame data. Wait until Black Friday - that's when I bought my Launch X431 and saved a good chunk of money. I wouldn't be surprised if the VD700 falls below $100 on sale.
Matco maximus code reader pro. PN#MDMAXCRPROA. It works great as a reader and reset tool (service, parking brake, battery,etc) for euro cars. It is a rebadged launch so if you can find the launch version you can probably get it on the cheap. I think this Matco branded one was like $300
Veepeak on Amazon is like $10 and does pretty much everything. Make sure you are getting the right one for your needs- ie; bluetooth or Wi-Fi output signal.
