Now we are talking. GM is the largest automotive producer in the world but all the aid is expected to come from the US. Very few GMs that are produced in the US are exported to other countries. Those other GM cars must be manufactured some where?

Holden, Opel, Vaxhall, where are they manufacured? Any help there?

While I'm no expert on the inner-workings of GM, which automatically makes me over-qualified to work in management there, I do have a couple theories on this.

First, GM as a whole is in deep E36 M3, even though their overseas brands are probably making a profit. Just not enough profit to make up for the losses in the North American market. Also, not enough profit to be able to certify their better platforms and engines for sale over here.

Plus, before our gas prices spiked, GM (as well as Ford and Chrysler) put all their eggs in the truck/SUV basket, because that's what Joe the Procologist's Wife wanted to drive. It's also where the profits were. The overseas markets, already paying $5/gallon US and having really small parking spaces, seemed less than interested in our offerings.

While the collapse of GM would obviously be a blow to the economies where Opels, Vauxhalls and Holdens are built, those areas are dealing with their own economic struggles right now, and have better things to do than throw money at GM so they can figure out how to get an additional 2mpg out of the Hummer H2.

Canada, I believe is a different story. GM's American and Canadian operations probably all fall under the "GM North America" umbrella, making them more closely dependant on each other than the European/Australian parts of the company.

Overall, I think the entire GM "empire" is screwed, it's just that the whole Canadian part of the equation is better at scaring people than mentioning the loss of Opel.
